How do I know if I have USB 1.1 or USB 2.0? And if I have 1.1 and want to upgrade to 2.0, do I need to install a new board and replace my 4-port hub?
    Appreciate any insights.

    Bill,
You need to check the model # with the manufacturer of your 4 port hub to determine if it's 1.1 or 2.0. If it's on the Motherboard then check the model # on the manufacturers site.
If you determine your existing USB is 1.1 then yes you need to purchase a new PCI plugin board (or a new motherboard if your thinking of upgrading the system?). You will need USB 2.0 drivers as well.

USB 2.0 cards are cheap. I bought an Iogear 2-porter for only $9; their 5-porter is available at Buy.com for $32. Another option, if your machine can handle it, is to buy a multiple use card that has not only usb 2.0 ports, but firewire and other advanced features as well.

BTW, I don't recall installing any drivers. Plug & Play took care of everything.
