windows 98 installer and ie 6

    i am running windows 98 . in may installed internet explorer 6
    now cannot install any software. the installer will not ru;n
    checks the msid*.dll and reads 6.0000??? and kicks out
    i have tried to install advance perl and windows 2000 work
    with the same results.

    i already have these files . they will not run. they check
    the id file and read the version number of ie and quit
    with an error message bad comman line parameters
    or if try to run the windows 2000 office get the comment that
    temp is inaccessible however that is not true as files have
    already been writtern there

    the clean up file will not execute.

    I believe you have some problems in the registry. First I would Restart in Dos Mode and type this in at the prompt;
    scanreg /fix <enter>
    When you get the message that windows has repaired the registry, reboot.
    If you cannot install anything after that, use a startup floppy to boot into pure dos and install windows on top of itself. Do not save the old files when asked and make sure it installs into C:\Windows, you will get a prompt for this.
    Choose CDrom support, watch the screen for the drive letter for the CD, and replace the X with the letter, if you only have the C: drive it may be E:. Type this in to run setup:
    X:\win98\setup.
    If you have a recovery CD, the files to run setup may be on the hard drive, in this case type this in,
    c:\windows\options\cabs\setup
