I just got a new Dell Inspiron 8500 laptop. I also bought a MS multimedia keyboard and mouse. The mouse works fine, but I can't get the keyboard to work.

On the receiver, there are to "ends ", one for the mouse (which is a USB connector) and a keyboard (which is a PS/2 connector). My laptop doesn't have a PS/2 port (I thought it would have). So what I did is went and bought a converter from PS/2 to USB. When I plug the keyboard into the pc (using the convertor), it detects new hardware and says what it is, but it doesn't work. If I press the "function" on the wireless keyboard, the light on the reveiver lights up, but caps and numlock will not.

Does anyone have any idea what the problem could be?

    Thanks!

    Nick

Have you tried using the USB connector? It's there in case you don't have a ps2?

No convertors came with the keyboard/mouse. The mouse cord had a usb connector. The keyboard had a ps/2 connector. I purchased a ps/2 to USB convertor, tried that, but nothing. The "F Lock" button on the keyboard when pressed lites up the "F Lock" lite on the receiver.

There wasn't a connector. I had to purchase one, but it still didn't work.

If it's like mine, you only have to plug in the usb, leave the ps/2 unplugged

mmm, the A4 tech wireless mouse and keyboard needs both plugged in. Maybe yours only requires the USB, I doubt it. PS2 to USB connectors don't work for keyboards sometimes, I've seen that boefore when I tried to convert a ps2 keyboard to usb

    Calculus,

Before reading your message, at noon today I tried again to get the keyboard to work. I downloaded the most current version of the setup software from MS. Installed it...and nothing. I hit the NumLock key and nothing worked. I then unplugged the keyboard connector and then happend to look at the wireless receiver and the numlock lite was lit. I press the numlock key on the keyboard and the lite went off. I then hit the windows key and the start button displayed! It works!

All this time, all I had to have connected was the usb mouse connector...not the keyboard. I didn't have to buy a converter and I doubt the new setup file had anything to do with it.

    Weird...

You said "Maybe yours only requires the USB, I doubt it. "...well, you where correct...only needed the usb one connected.

Just letting you guys know that it worked and hopefully if someone else has the same issue, they will run across this post.

Thanks again! Now I can play my online games a lot easier than that laptop keyboard :)

Also...thanks ztoelke, I didn't see your post either until just now.

    Nick
