You can. Just keep the same question in one Forum.

First off. Please change the attitude. You are asking for our help. And I am asking for yours.

Do you or do you not agree that that is fair ?

Because it causes MASS confusion for both you and us.

I may reply to one and someone else reply to the other. And our replys may either conicide or be quite different but still apply to the original question. And also sometimes we do catch and error or something else the we may have made.

Then you have to keep going between them and wind up VERY CONFUSED.

Plus I believe there is a BBS rule about this.

So keeeping things in one forum is FAR better for all concerned.

Everything about a computer is a definite maybe. Your CD drive may not be reading it correctly. If you have another CD drive (like a DVD, etc) already in the computer, try that.

I had to swap the drive in this computer to get Windows XP installed. The faulty drive works quite well in other computers.

Does the PC actually freeze or is it possible that you are not waiting long enough ?

XP does do A LOT of checking before it gives the OK to install.

Also are you within Windows when you put the CD in ?

I found this to cause a problem when I tired it.

I have found ( after several bad attempts ) that XP ( or any OS ) works the best when booting directly to the CD ( or to a floppy for 98 then to the CD ) from a power off state. That way we are more assured that nothing that might conflict is still in RAM. And there may be less possible hardware conflicts. Especailly if 98 was using the Config.sys or Autoexec.bat.

And last but certainly not least.

IF you are upgrading to fix any possible problems that existed in 98 I would suggest a Format and a clean install. Upgrading over top quite often will not fix problems. The OS being upgraded from needs to be as error free as humanly possible.

    Hello Sam,

Once you solve the read disc problem:

Definately a good idea to use the option on the setup disc to go thru the compatibility check BEFORE trying to upgrade.

BTW, I agree with BillyBob that a clean install would be better, worth the extra time and effort.

    Regards - Charles

I also had problems when the CD was in a CDR-RW drive.

The old straught CDROM under it worked fine.

Also you could try cleaning the CD. Just a litle spec of dust or a smudge will have a bad effect.
