Not quite sure where this belongs so I'll put it here and in 98 for now.

I've got a new PC coming on Friday and there's a couple of gigs worth of data I want to transfer over to it.

I want to connect the two PCs together using the paralell port and then use dcc to transfer the files. I know I'll only get about 150Kb/s transfer rate and that it'll take a few hours to transfer everything I need but I'd rather do this than spend my time switching between PCs and rewriting and erasing a CD-RW which I believe would be almost as slow (time spent erasing, burning and transfering would mount to about 50 mins for me).

I thought about taking the hard drive out and putting it in the new PC to transfer everything but I've never installed a hard drive before so I'd rather not in case I ***** something up.

My question is: How would I go about setting up a Win 98-Win XP transfer setup? I hear there's some compatability issues so I'm not sure if it's gonna work.

    Any advice?

Thanks for that. I'll take a look now.

It's just that I found a site a little earlier when researching this and I found that Windows XP has issues allowing a DCC with Win 98.

Will this also work from the paralell port using the "File and Settings Transfer Wizard" or just serial before I buy the lead to do so?

I just ran the Wizard up to the point where it asks for transfer method - only serial cable option.

May be worth considering networking the 2 PC's temporarily ?

2 x NICs and a CAT cable plus XP's Network Wizard.

I guess I'll have to go with my original idea and copy everything I want to CD-RW unless somebody else out there can tell me of a possible way of connecting the two PCs via the parallel port.

The serial port is just too slow.

    Thanks anyway.

Even a way using a USB cable would be great.

    That'd be much better.

Are you up to slaving the old hard drive to the new computer?

Just pull the old hard drive out of the old computer and attach it to the new computer.

If you don't feel like changing jumpers, just take off the CD ROM and put it as master on the secondary IDE.
