I am trying to download CorelDRAW Graphics Suite 11 Trial (Windows). I am using dial-up, so the 216MB d/l inevitably gets lost when I lose the connection to a time-out (connection keepers are out of the question w/ my ISP).

I tried to use some download managers, but when I do, they always 'finish' at exactly 288 bytes and confirm as complete - this is nuts

For those curious, here is the d/l link. It will d/l in IE fine, but I can't get it to download via a d/l manager. Any ideas why this might be happening? Any workarounds??

    Hi Bruce,

    My two penn'orth (2 cents? :)) - for what it's worth -

Is it possible that the trial is an html download rather than an ftp which download managers deal with??

Assume you have tried directing the download manager to Corel's ftp site?

    Got a friend with broadband?

Works Here with our download utility(is resumable) and with just IE( gets past 288kb anyway), You did fill in the form and next page aggree to the ULA ?Just checking :)

Strange I cant even open the site nor get around unless I disable Adshield.our PopupBlocker

I tried one of there trials Long time ago, will never again
IT left itself all over the pc and the registry

    Hi Bruce,

Just like Pete no guarantie, but generally speaking 216 mb is huge for dialup, like Pete says Broadband would be fine.
In regards to timeouts I have fixed that with a very nice email proggy that I use " IncrediMail" just set it to check for Mail every 5 minutes and that does the same as your connection keeper would, makes your connection look busy.
    Works with my ISP anyway.
As a Download Manager I use Flash Get 1.4 it can do FTP and HTML you can download a Trail version from
    www.amazesoft.com
I think that you should also make sure that your Power Management is set to never shut down HD it could be set to a time and a huge download like this will at least take 10 hr.
on a 56K Modem to download.
    good luck

Here are some ideas I found with a groups.google search:
Subject: Re: Download resume feature. How do you use it.
    Newsgroups: microsoft.public.windows.inetexplorer.ie55.browser
    Date: 2002-08-13 18:51:36 PST

Make sure "Use HTTP 1.1" is selected in Tools...Internet
    Options...Advanced tab
Make sure you clear your TIF via Tools...Internet Options...General tab, Delete files
Make sure your TIF size is greater than the file(s) you are downloading
    - Tools...Internet Options...General tab, Settings.
And the resume downloading feature must be supported by the server you are downloading from.
Being behind a proxy server - as might be the case with using AOL - could prevent this.

In my experience IE resumes the download if these three conditions are met:
You are connecting to the same server.
    The server supports resuming downloads.
The file is still in TIF.

When I try that link, it first acts like it wants to download a file and my download manager opens. If I let it download, it pops up with its message about how that appears to be a web page rather than a file download, asking if I want to open the browser. I tell it no and get the same results you did...a tiny file. I tell it yes, open the browser, and a page opens with links to all the file downloads, including the one you want.

Apparently, your download manager is having some difficulty distinguishing between an actual download and a link to a page with download links on it.

Try it again but this time, tell your download manager not to download the file. The page should open and your download manager should kick in again when you click on the file you want....or just go straight to this page and avoid the entire hassle. ;)

    Hi, All ~

Thanks for your replies. :) Please see individual repsonses below.

I apologize, but the link I provided above won't work here as each link is unique in that an ID number is generated for that particular d/l after completing the registration process.

Perhaps the site may likely not accept 'Range Requests' as d/l managers make multiple connections to a file and create a heavy burden on servers. A browser will only create 1 connection for a file d/l. If range requests are disabled then maybe the d/l manager is rendered useless on that site but a browser will work fine.

The 288 bytes might be the header information that was my d/l manager performing a range request and their site saying "I don't think so!"

'http://www.corel.com/6763/downloads/CorelDRAW/CorelGRAPHICSSUITE/11/trial/pc/CorelDRAW11TrialVersion.exe will not d/l with FreshDownload, StarDownloader, or MetaProducts Download Express.

I tried reducing the connections to just 1 on the d/l managers, but same results thus far. I can get an unattended 200MB+ d/l done overnight, but wish to pick up where left off after broken connection. Any other possible workarounds??

@Pete ~ It is an http download. Can't locate any ftp location - do they have one? You have broadband, friend? ;)

@Lonny ~ Yes, you must fill in the form and register or you will not get a download. In the source of the end page provided for d/l of the file, I see "DOWNLOADHITBRICK 66774180 @ Tue Jul 29 19:57:17 EDT 2003" & "TRACKED DOWNLOAD - registering to user # 66774180" I have gotten up to 96MB in IE before losing connection. Have tried 3 different d/l managers and all to no avail. You got past the 288 byte header information?? Please let me know what d/l manager you were using, please.

@Hawk ~ I am on dial-up, not broadband. I have a connection keeper that works fine, but AT&T auto-disconnects regardless of your real activity after so many hours so thus the need to resume d/l.

@Alice ~ No problem d/l in IE, but need to resume where I left off after lost connections which IE does not support.

@Miz ~ As per my apology at the the top, you cannot use my link as it is unique to my registration and thus the reason you are redirected to the HTML page - the d/l managers are fine. The link you provided is where you begin the reg process before a d/l is allowed.

    D/L mgrs

    Try this one: MassDownloader!!!

Been using it for more than 2 years without any problems. Free trial - $20 if you like it. Money well spent, IMHO :)!!

Very strange indeed. I just went to the link I posted, clicked on the link to download CorelDRAW Graphics Suite 11 Trial (Windows), filled out their form, agreed to the EULA, eventually got to the download page itself and it started downloading. At no time did my download manager (DAP Plus) kick in.

So I canceled that download and right clicked on the download link, told it to download with DAP and it fired right up. When I canceled that download, it was coming in at around 350 kps, so the connection was fine.

Are you sure you need this product ?
It is massive bloatware and very difficult to get out of your system
if you try to uninstall it.
What graphic/drawing functions are you seeking ?
There may be suggestions from board members for a better
    solution.
    regards

Have you locked BHO's from loading in your browser with SpyBot or another app?

@Abraxas ~ No BHOs locked, although I don't see how this relates. All d/l mgrs work fine - except for this site.

@Merlin ~ Yes, at the request of a client. Already have all the other nice ones, but need exists for newest CorelDraw.

@Everyone ~ I called Corel and explain my dilemma - they shipped me the CD FOC. :p

Even odder....I have tried 8 different d/l mgrs and not one would take or resume at this site (and all work flawlessly elsewhere). I tried one more at one's suggestion, Lightning Download, and would you believe it not only took it, but resumes after multiple pauses and cancelling. I re-attempted the others, but no go.

    Go figure. :(

I'm not sure, either. DAP uses the dapiebar.dll BHO, but I was not sure if it was necessary for downloading.

I use DAP with the setting to ask whether to use regular or accelerated download. I did this after I couldn't download some things with DAP but could with the regular download.

Since some sites say specifically that you should not use download managers, I suspect some do not allow the multiple connections that some of them use.
