    EI problem after security update

I just downloaded the windows and explorer updates. At the same time, I loaded spybot and adaware and ran them. Plus, I added a firewall. Now ie works so slow it is really unworkable.
I have to use aol which seems to work just fine. I wonder if I deleted something that explorer needs in spybot? I have really had quite a week trying to get rid of spies. If anyone can help with the problem of ie running like a toad, I would appreciate the help. Also, doesn't aol use ie? If so, why isn't it affected?
Can I reinstall ie over ie? Something is definitely wrong.

Your first paragraph in your post is what messed it up. You can install IE over IE, if you ran a Repair of IE, it might tell you to do it. You may need to install the updates again.
AOL does use some of IE, and so does windows.

    Hello Wiry,

You have done a number of things almost all at once, not knowing which gives you the problem.

    MS updates
    Added a Firewall
    Installed Ad-Aware & SSD

BAD idea to affect the system with multiple changes w/o seeing first how any single change works.

If I were you, I would undo all your changes and than repeat the steps one at a time and live with it for a while.

You have already gone down the road of doing something (uninstalling IE - reinstalling another version) that now compounds the mess and turned out to be useless.

    Regards - Charles

Actually, I did undo spybot and adaware and removed the firewall. Then, still unable to work with ie6, I uninstalled it to a previous version and reinstalled ie6. That seemed to improve things a lot. I still have one internet site with lots of pop-ups that is very slow loading. I can't figure that out but I can access it with aol just fine. All of these things are very complicated.
I think one has to sometimes learn the hard way. I'm not a big fan of microsoft. Often their fixes are worse than before and not tested properly. Anyway, I'm backed up and everything is working, sort of.

    Hi Wiry,

Of all the secrurity measures you want to install, the firewall is the most important. Concentrate on getting that working.

The others, such as the MS updates, can wait.

OK ... my firewall is up but my ie is still running painfully slow. Does anyone know how to repair ie6 in Win98? I DON'T want to reinstall Windows. Maybe I should install netscape and use it instead of IE. I have aol and it works fine but it is a lot toadier than ie usually. But now, my ie is crawling. What are your thoughts about Netscape?

    Thanks

Go to start/programs/accessories/system tools/system information/, look under Tools tab at top left, you should find IE6 repair tool there...If that dosen't work, maybe you could try to reinstall W98 over top of your current installation. Be sure to make a bootup disc 1st.

To Repair IE, go to Control Panel\Add Remove Programs. Doubleclick the IE 6 entry. A window will pop up with three options, one will be to Repair, select and then OK. Reboot when prompted.
James Martin has the other way to get to it. He posted right when I started this.
