I have been trying out WordPerfect, OpenOfficeWrite, and AbiWord in an attempt to get away from an impossible-to-fix problem with MS WORD 2000, and have narrowed it down to WordPerfect 8.0 until I hit a show stopper with it. The current stumbling block that I am encountering is that I am mystified that there seems to be no means to directly convert my existing WORD documents to a usable format for these potential replacements for WORD, and altho I have found an INdirect but very cumbersome means of migrating the text, I lose the formatting that was done in WORD so that is not really acceptable...

Does anyone know of a method or maybe a standalone file conversion utility tool designed to perform this migration, that for some reason I just can't seem to find for these two versions of these two products? I have searched and searched, and even found info that states things like I should have a "save as" file type selection in WORD for saving as a WordPerfect file, but it just ain't there... And older versions and newer versions supposedly have file conversion utils, but these versions do not appear to, unless I am missing them somewhere... And I did find a couple of utils, but they want about $100 that I don't have to throw away on this one time effort...

Someone's probably going to ask, so, yes I have saved the WORD doc's in both RTF and TXT formats. TXT loses all formatting of course, but even though RTF maintains most of the formatting, when I attempt to either paste it into or open it with WordPerfect, much of the formatted text turns into those little boxes ([][][][][][][]).

I use Word 2000 every day, under save as there are five different choices to save a file as a WordPerfect file.

Don't know about the other 2 programs, never used either

I have WordPerfect 11 and Office XP. This works for me:

Open the Word document in Wordperfect directly.
    File/Open/<filename.doc>

WordPerfect does the conversion and you can save as anything you want.
