I have my desktop icons where I want them. Is there any available program (preferably freeware) that can backup the desktop and restore it as needed?

The icons are just shortcuts files that can easily be copied to a floppy. Look in the C:\Windows\desktop folder.

So the .lnk files also include the icons' positions on the screen?

No, the position on the desktop is not stored within the lnk, however I just did a quick search on Google and found this, don't know if it's any good or not, but it's free.

I'm sure with a little poking around you can find what you want, all I searched for was "restore desktop "

Scroll down to the bottom of the page and look for other utilities. They have a one free download that includes ActivIcons. That's what you want. It's a great program. Takes a bit to get used to it. But it works! It's exactly what you want!

    Hello,

I use "layout" which is made up of
    Layout.dll and Layout.reg files.
    How it works:
    -put Layout.dll in C:\WINDOWS
-run Layout.reg to create the needed entries
    in Registry
-click_R the Recycle Bin where 2 new
    items were created:
    -Save Desktop Icon Layout
    -Restore Desktop Icon Layout

    Here you can get it.

    good luck

    Stefan
