I have tried Installing the Newest Windows XP pro. on a AMD Athlon(tm) XP processer. Its speed 1466 Mhz with 256ram with windows Me. I inserted the xp cd and followed the steps they gave. after copying the files, it rebooted my system where it shows a black backgroud with words: windows xp and the bottom, a loading bar. Thats where the problem started. I waited for a long time but it would not progress. I tried to reformat my harddisk then boot from cd and install xp and i still receive the same problem. I tried installing back windows me and there was no error, everything was fine. Is there anyway for me to install xp?

Hi Benja - and Welcome to the Board :)

Try again and do a clean install - boot from the CD (you may need to go into the BIOS and set the boot sequence to CD > Floppy > HD.

Follow the guide given here http://www.winsupersite.com/showcase/windowsxp_sg_clean.asp

At stage 6 elect to do a FULL FORMAT not a quick format - and stick with FAT 32 for the time being.

Hey, thanks for the warm welcome!!
Anyway, i did as you told me and i made a clean format inserted the xp pro. cd, it loads from cd-rom drive and loads all the driver files and when i least expected setup says "Loading Windows Setup" or something like that my com hangs, my keyboard would not respond. I have double check already, my system stuitable to install the new windows version. Do you know why such things happen? ( Hanging of com when im halfway in the windows xp setup)

ps: i have no choise but to use a computer at a lan cafe :(

Sorry to hear you have problems :(

There's nothing wrong with the computer spec - XP will run OK with 256 Mb Ram.

There's probably nothing wrong with the computer itself if it runs OK on Me

If you loaded Me from a Cd then the CD drive is probably OK

Which leaves the possibility that the XP CD is damaged - warped or scratched? or it is a bad copy - legitimate or otherwise?

    Wish I could help further.

A couple of other thoughts after searching this board :

!. Could be bad RAM, even though Me works

    2. Disable Boot antivirus in the BIOS, disconnect any hardware which is not needed to install - all you need is mouse, keyboard & CD-Rom and try again.

    Good Luck :)

Like with anything else, the hardest problems to track down are intermittent problems. That ils, problems that don't occur in all situations.

The machine I'm using had problems loading the setup files for Windows XP and would similarly hang during the installation. I swapped the CD drive. But the "faulty" CD drive works quite well in another machine.

I have a friend with the exact same problem as you trying to install a bootable and running OS. The computer is a Slot P3 650, 256 MB.

The computer once was able to load and run Windows 2000 in a fresh install. I had to put another fresh installation. It wouldn't take. It would hang. If I got Windows 2000 to install, it would hang on the Service Pack updates.

The computer should be able to run Windows XP. I tried installating that. It would install XP completely. But it wouldn't boot.

I installed Windows 98SE and all updates. The thing works like a watch.

I suspect RAM problems. It may not be defective RAM. It may be the machine is picky about its RAM. Some are extremely picky.
