    Appreciate some assistance.

Anyone know of a good CPU cooling software for an AMD Athlon Thunderbird 1.1 GHz?

Can only say what I did and that is to replace the fan that came with my AMD 1.2(which I used for about 6-7 months)with a Swiftech MCX370(copper base) and have been happy with it. With system temp 75deg. F CPU used to run about 120deg. At the moment with same sys. temp. it's running at 107deg. (full load -distributed computing). Two models of this cooler are offered, one aluminum and one copper base, I opted for the copper, but suppose the alum. would offer improvement.

(Dang! Gotta learn to wake up before posting  )

    Hi FZWG,
I don't know it these utilities work with your Athlon but you can find Rain, Waterfall, and CPU Idle here http://www.tweakpc.com/Cpu.htm
I've been using Rain on all my systems and it works fine but I'm running o/c'd Celerons.

Thank you for the info and the link.

Looking for software that may aide the cooling process, but the fan mentioned looks like something worth checking into.

    Have a good week.

NOI (no offense intended) Tinknocker but none of the utilities you mentioned will work on an Athlon. Rain used to work awesome in the Socket 7 days though.

If you want to use cooling software with Athlons you have to get an editor that lets you modify the actual registers in your motherboard's chipset. The registers in question depend on your board's chipset.

Obviously, doing this is way more "tech" then simply loading a little program and alot more dangerous. If you want to learn more about it go to google.com and search on WPCREDIT.

I build a good number of systems and subscribe to the theory (that isn't my own actually) that constantly subjecting your cpu to significant temperature extremes between idle and full load is not a good thing. The range between my idle and full load temps is usually 3-5C degrees. I simply working on better hardware cooling techniques.

Chiles4-Thanks for the info. The temp extremes applies also to the debate as to whether machine should be left on all the time or shut down when unused, I would imagine. Boy when I read some threads I come away thinking I probably ought to change my experience from Beginner (+) to Beginner (-). :~)
Per your comments about your temp variations twixt full load and idle I ran a check and found mine now to be right at 5*C(unless VIA hardware Monitor is lying to me). And I wouldn't touch that WPCREDIT with a 10'pole. :)

    Chiles4,

    Thank you for your reply.

After doing some research, tend to agree that perhaps going the hardware route may be the way to go.

Thought about VCool, but the AMD Athlon Thunderbird 1.1GHz is on a DFI AM75-TC board with the VIA KM133A (VT8365A and VT 82C686B) Chipset.

It seems that VCool caters to the KT133A chipset.

If you have any words of wisdom, appreciate your two cents on VCool.

    :)

No offense taken Chiles4. I did preface my post with a caution because I wasn't sure if they would work with an Athon. Now I know, thanks. As to wcpredit and wcprset, I have those H. Oda utilities but can't bring myself to try them on any of my machines.

    FZWG,
If you do decide to buy a new hsf consider avoiding anything with a Delta 38 fan on it. I bought a Vantec CCK-6035D with that fan installed. Had read numerous articles about the noise level, but until you hear one run, you have no idea how disruptive it can be. Imagine continuous fingernails on a blackboard x10.
