Do a Start~Run and type SYSEDIT

Select the Config.sys tab and put REM and a Space at the front ot the line containing the CDROM driver.

For example the line will look like

    REM device=btcdrom.sys /D:mscd001

This is the CDROM driver for DOS and unless you really need the CDROM in DOS you do not need that line anyway. So you can actually delete it.

Also there will more than Likely be a line in the Autoexec.bat containing /D:MSCD001 This can be deleted also.

Or also put REM in front of it.

Again if the CDROM is not needed in DOS, delete both lines.

If you are not using DOS at all you can REM out everything.

Or just plain rename or delete the two files. I suggest a rename of the extention only.

Yeah i don't use dos who does nowadays

I do. Especially in 98SE. I have two DOS programs that do need both files.

i notice that the @ECHO OFF is causing a problem .

??????????? That should be gone with the Autoexec.bat.

Also the CDROM should not be any problem with the files deleted.

Now we may be possibley looking at another cause of a problem here. If it is indeed on the DOS side of the house.

To your knowledge have you ever restarted Windows in the MS DOS Mode. and have it either lockup so that you had to or otherwise used Chtrl-Alt-Del to get out of it ?

By MS DOS Mode I mean while in Windows selecting Start/run/Shutdown and restart in the MS DOS MODE.

If EXIT is not used to get out of that it can cause problems.

If indeed this is the problem them I NEED some help also. I only had it happen once ( in 98FE ) but I re-installed Windows to fix it.

Something that I should have mentioned.

Take a look at the Device Manager and see if the CDROM is loading in Windows.

Also take a peek at the IDE Controllers and see if there are any yellow marks on them.

If there are I am betting that Windows is running in the Compatability mode. Which can indicate a problem on the DOS side of the house.

The @Echo Off line will not cause a problem. All that line does is tell dos not to print the lines that are being executed in the C:\Autoexec.Bat file to the screen. If you want, and that is the only thing in the C:\Autoexec.Bat, delete the line and then save. That file should now be empty.
If you have a CDROM, not a CDR or a CDRW, Win98 has the correct drivers for it. Those lines you used to have loaded drivers so dos could use the CDROM, windows doesn't need them.
Anybody that wants to get their windows working again. Ever Fdisk and Format? Restore a backup registry or a Scanreg /fix? Have a hard windows crash, reboot and have Scandisk run? Diagnose a drive? Install windows?
I can do some things faster in dos than in Windows. I could use a dos command to create a playlist to be used by WMP. Yes, a file created in dos used in windows.

well i delete them both but now i notice that the @ECHO OFF is

No it should not cause probelms but the @ECHO OFF should have disapeared if the auteoexec.bat was deleted.

That is what gave me the idea about a possible illegal exit of the MS DOS Mode.

Yep i just did a fdisk lol :D Anyways What i did notice in devise manager was only one yellow mark and thats my crstal wdm audio device ... Now because this is a old ibm computer i did go to there site and i did downloaded that driver , i also install it now i even deleted from the devise manager and afterward restarted the comp i go back to the devise manager and its yellow mark is still there... So my thinking is maybe it could be the driver which i downloaded from ibm ???... One more thing i thought when i was at the autoexec.bat that i was just to delete that one line posted above here or was i suppose to delete the whole thing in autoexec.bat ?

There is a chance the 98 CD has the drivers you need. I have the 98SE Upgrade, and it has a folder named X:\Drivers\Audio\Acer\Aw32, with a file named Cwbaudio.Inf with this line in it "Crystal Driver Disk ". Maybe what you need?
Win98 will be fine without a Autoexec.Bat file. Just about the only use for it is for AVG or certain versions of Norton AV bootup scan, as far as windows is concerned.
