I have Windows XP Home w/OE 6. something and all the latest SP's and updates. Somehow I stopped receiving new email notification sound or icon in the toolbar, although I have both checked under options.

I have not found any possible solutions to this anywhere, including Microsoft support. Any suggestions by this forum would be more than welcomed.

Thanks for your response. However, I have been to that site 3 times and have not found any help there. Short of re-installing (which I definitely don't want to do) I don't know what to do.

I just might have to live with it.

Have you tried uninstalling and reinstalling Outlook Express only through Control Panel>Add Remove Programs>Add Remove Windows Componnents (left-hand pane)?

It's worth a shot but you should back up all your email folders first. I've done OE uninstalls/reinstalls without loss of data but the first time I try it without backing up the folders first will be the time they get wiped out. ;)

All that I show under Add/Remove Programs is: "Outlook Express Update Q330994" and I am afraid to touch it. I am not that much puter literate, being a retired old fart.

I'll keep looking. There has got to be some simple answer. (Hopefully, ha, ha.)

There is a repair feature for Internet Explorer(Outlook Express is tied to it). I don't use XP, so I would wander over to the XP board and ask the repair procedure for IE. I know its slightly different then Win98.

How about Control Panel>Sounds and Audio Devices>Sounds Tab. Scroll down to email notification and check it out for a good sound file?

You do realize that OE must be open for the notification to work?

When you get an email, you should get the sound and an envelope flashing in the notification area.

Last night I changed the sound for mail notification and when I turned on my puter this morning, walla!, I had the sound and the icon in my taskbar. Strange, because the default sound works.

But I am happy, because I thought it might be something simple and it was. Thanks for all the responses from this forum.
