Just got new laptop. HP ZT1130. WXpHome. 56K connection. But, can't get my email!

    Installed NS 4.79 in dirs:
c:\program files\netscape.479 and copied orig user files (from old laptop)to the new user folder.

NS comes up ok. dials, connects. But, can't access email.

Was using Webwasher on old laptop (OSR2), pop3 server set as 127.0.01. New one wants to keep that server ID, but Webwasher says no good for Xp. Is that my prob? And, how do I get out of it?

Started installing NS 6.2.1 but takes forever on my 56k connection. Will try again later. For now, 4.79 will suffice.

BTW is there a way to install NS6 w/o the "online" way?:(

    Hi GPaDavis,

    From the WebWasher site:

    http://www.webwasher.com/en/products/wwash/faq.htm

    Installation

Q: Does WebWasher work on Windows XP?

A: Win XP may cause problems with WebWasher on certain systems. This will be fixed in a future version; unfortunately, there is no release date yet available.

This may apply to your system.

You most certainly can download Netscape 6.2.1 other than with the "online" method. In fact I recommend that you don't use that method, ever!

Here are some download sites for you:

    Netscape Official FTP Site

    SillyDog701 Netscape Browser Archive

This site offers several versions of Netscape 6.2.1. This is my preference, as I like the slim version, without all the fluff!

You can get the full version here:
    http://sillydog.org/narchive/

Let us know if you have more questions!

Hey thanks for the quick reply.

Somehow, I stumbled onto the email problem -- something to do with fact that Webwasher uses proxy setting and Xp won't play with Webwasher, but my prefs tried to use the proxy. Went back to the orig. (installed) prefs and all seems ok -- for moment anyway. This Xp is a real challenge to those of us already challenged!

Tried two attempts to d/l the lite and full versions but after a few 100K's the d/l aborts without any error signal. I'll try the NS FTP site and see if that makes any difference. Maybe my win setup is limiting the d/l time???

Glad to hear that XP and Webwasher are copacetic! ;)

I tried the DL's at SillyDog for the Standalone and the Streamline versions, and encountered no problem. Could your Firewall settings be the problem? It's hard to say, as I'm not at all familiar with XP, but sounds like there is a configuration that's off somewhere.

In Netscape Preferences | Advanced, disable SmartUpdate. Not sure that will help, but it might.

    With Netscape closed:
Do a "Find" for *.tmp. Delete all files.
    Delete your netscape.hst file
    Delete your Netscape Cache files

Let us know if you continue to have problems.

Sorry, I mislead you. Haven't tried WebWasher yet. Plan to in next day or so. Solved the email access problem, address book ok. But, don't have my old
email files installed properly. Will continue to play with this one. I'm persistent. One of us will succumb: me or Xp.

Thanks again. Will keep you posted.

    GPaDavis,

If you have no mail in your new Mail folders:

    Close Netscape

In the NEW User Profile Folder:
(NOTE: If it asks to overwrite the files say YES.)

Copy all the files from the OLD user profile news folder to the NEW news folder.
Copy all the files from the OLD user profile mail folder to the NEW mail folder.

Copy cookies.txt to the NEW one.
Copy custom.dic to the NEW user profile directory. (This is your dictionary.)

In the NEW user profile directory, add the following line to both of these files, LIPREFS.JS AND PREFS.JS. This will prevent the Netscape advertisement from coming up when you click on Get Msg:

    user_pref( "mailnews.start_page.enabled ", false);

If you do have mail in your new Mail folders:
With Netscape closed: rename the backup files to InboxII, DraftsII, etc., or anything you wish, and paste them into your new Mail folder.

Open Communicator, and you should see the InboxII, etc., folders. All you need to do then is copy the mail from the backup (InboxII) to the new Inbox, etc. When you are certain that everything is working correctly, then you can delete the unused folders.

Can't thank you enuff. Will do the email stuff later. A few chores to do or my better half'll get after me.

I'm a lurker and lurner. Your missles of knowledge have always paid off. So am confident these Xp aches&pains will soon pass.
