I am trying to update my video driver to the latest ATI display driver. When I try to uninstall the current driver, using add/remove programs, a box comes up saying "error initializing" with the only option to press "ok ". The driver will not uninstall. If I go to the Device Manager and try to uninstall it, through the device properties, it seems to uninstall. I reboot and than I have I guess the XP default driver with the poor resolution. I double click the new driver file to start the install and the system crashes. When it comes back it has a different driver than the one I uninstalled, but the resolution is back to the normal setting. Same thing again, it will not uninstall.

I am chicken to keep trying it through the device manager. It takes several hard boots to get everything back. In the past I have updated the driver with no problem. I am trying to update it because of problems with some applications. Any ideas?

    Thanks.

Try reloading your current driver and then uninstalling it through Add/Remove.

It may not be necessary to uninstall the old driver first. Just delete the ATI folder in the root directory and all files in your Temp folder that you can so none of the older driver files are around for the new installation.

Thanks for the reply. I don't have the old driver file and don't know which one it was.

I tried deleting the ATI folder, etc. The current driver is the XP default ATI driver and was not affected by my deletion.

When I try to open the new driver file the system still immediately crashes. I thought it may be the new driver file, but the last three releases have done the same thing. I keep hoping the next release will work.

Since I have had this card I have updated the driver three times without any problem. Now it won't let me and I am stuck with the XP ATI driver.

It may be a good idea to clean up the Registry - certainly can't do any harm.

Run Regcleaner , Look in the first 2 colums for anything relating to ATI (and anything else that you are positive should not be there) and remove them. Then run Tools > Registry Cleanup > Do them all. Delete all it finds

Run EasyClean 1.7 . Run only Uneccessary Files and Registry Clean and delete all it finds. In the skip box in Unnecessary Files type 'HELP'. There is a bug which may disable Help and Support - this Registry fix solves that problem.

Run RegScrubXP . Run Regscrub finds problems and fix all it finds.

And for good measure run Regseeker http://www.hoverdesk.net/freeware.htm

This sequence should clear any unwanted traces of ATI - and thoroughly clean the Registry at the same time. When you've done this try re-installing the driver.

When do the problems start? Does the self-extracting executable dump it's contents to the Temp folder correctly?

It crashes in less than one second. The system immediately crashes and restarts to the XP default driver with the normal resolution settings. There is no evidence of the file extracting.

Couple more things which might help in sourcing the problem -

    1. Right click My Computer > Properties > Advanced > Startup and Recovery > Settings > System Failure - untick 'Automatically restart.

PC will now crash to a BSOD which should indicate the stop error. Post that here.

    2. Right click My Computer > Manage > Event Viewer - System and Applications. Look for relevant errors and post them here ( double click on Error to open up info box - click on the button below the up/down arrows to paste it to the clipboard.

Post any relevant to your problem.

I ran all of the registry cleaners and tried reinstalling without any luck. I also tried what ATI suggested, see below, with the same result.

InstallShield Errors or Hangs during installation - Windows 2000/XP

1.Try emptying the Windows Temp folder.
    - Click Start, Click Run, in the Open line, type temp, and then click OK.
    - Delete the contents of the TEMP folder and all the subfolders as well.

    2. Try Removing the InstallShield Installation Information Folder.

    3. Try Removing the InstallShield folder.

    4. Try re-installing the ATI Software

Both the ATI driver and Control Panel also still show up in the add/remove programs list.

It seems like a real puzzle to me, but way over my head.

    Thanks.

You might try a selective startup and installing with nothing else running.

Run: msconfig. Check Selective Startup and uncheck all the boxes beneath.

Restart and try installing. I don't think that the ATI installer uses the Windows Installer Service, so I don't think it will need to be running.

Then, run msconfig again and put it back to normal.

Do you have any problems other than this installation?

You may not have to uninstall the old driver first. I hope you got the ATI drivers from the ATI site. The Windows Update drivers are dismal.

You may not have to uninstall the old drivers frist. Go into the control pannel > system > hardware > device manager > driver tab. Select Install New Driver.

If that doesn't work, try UNINSTALL driver. Don't reboot, it'll reinstall the old driver. Just install the new driver before rebooting.

If that doesn't work, try doing it in SAFE MODE, booting and pressing F8.

I actually got it loaded. I tried installing it in the Safe Mode and the file only extracted to a Temporary ATI folder. When the installation started I got three other different errors and it would not install. I restarted in the normal mode and was able to start the install from the ATI folder.

There is also an ATI Control Panel that I needed to install after the driver. I tried to install that in the normal mode and the system crashed again with the same errors listed in my previous post. I was however succesful installing it in the Safe Mode.

I still don't know what the problem was, but it is all loaded and seems to work.

During all of this I found something else I have a question about. I will post it next.

    Thanks for all the help.
