Are there any programs available that would allow me to capture images from webcam chats and save them as AVIs?

I use a program called "Stream Capture" that allows me to draw a box around the image I want to catch and record it as an Audio-Video Interlace. But the company site is down or no longer extant.

Wish I could help more, but good luck finding it. A search was inconclusive for me.

Do you still have the setup file?

I just formatted and reinstalled due to an unrecoverable disk error (power failure during defrag). I probably have it on CD. I'll look through them and let you know.

I had that happen to me once on my old Win95 machine, but it was fine afterwards. Guess I got lucky.

I found the file but was unable to open it (password-protected zip--no idea how I opened it originally!).

This program has been useful, too:
    http://www.techsmith.com/products/snagit/features.asp

Most of the vid capture programs I have will capture web images if they are in jpg format, but no luck capturing Java cams (though I haven't tried SnagIt on any of those).

A program called "Camembert" was just ghastly---I don't know if it was XP or the program itself, but the pre-programmed IP's didn't work and attempts to contact the web site for updates failed. It always needed to be closed through Task Manager.

Another called "Web Cam VCR" installed a lot of ads and a BHO. Again, this one only captured streams of jpg's.

A program called "Windows Media Recorder" from www.webattack.com will capture streams to the media player, but few cams use that format.

"Hypercam" from the maker of HypersnapDX (one of the few capture programs I've found that can correctly capture DirectX overlay screens) looks like a good possibility:
    http://www.hyperionics.com/

I have so many screen capture programs that I can't remember which do what, but you may want to search for
"screen capture" and see which ones have video capture functionality.

I hope this gives you something to work with.

(That disk error was a saga in itself. I couldn't boot without autochk.exe running and restarting, so I renamed it in the Recovery Console to get past that screen.

Then, it booted OK and I could access everything, but 10 gigs of disk space was unaccounted for. Norton and V-Com both siad the disk was fine, but chkdsk reported empty space incorrectly entered in the MFT as used space.

All my efforts to repair failed, so I saved everything and formatted. Though the computer worked fine, I couldn't use chkdsk at startup and thought it best to just fix it before the other shoe fell.

Acronis and Drive Image would not work due to, guess what?, a disk error.)

Thanks I'll do a web search for screen captures. That hyperonics program is shareware and I'm a bit broke at the moment.

    Found this on download.com.

Installed it and gave it a try. Works fine even tho its just the tryout one. The only thing it says is at the top is "This is the demo "

Only $30 if u wanna buy it as well when you get some cash. :)

I just tried SnagIt to record a Java web cam and it worked just fine.

It also recorded the video from the Media Player, but only after disabling DirectX by turning off all video acceleration.

    "Camtasia" also records the sound:

    (Nothing free, though.)
