First of I would like to say sorry if this is a question that has already been answered but I couldnt find it!

Ok, I have XP Home and turn my PC on this morning, I loaded as normal till it got to that screen with the Windows XP 'Flag' on a black background with the sort of green status bar thingy under it.
Here is where it goes wrong, that screen I mentioned above goes leaving me with a black screen and nothing! At this time the memory light if off so nothing is happening in the PC!

    Some notes:

I am a single user on the PC and therefore skip the login screen
    The PC is XP Home
The virus scan ran before it was turned off found nothing
    I CAN boot into safemode!

    Thanx,
    Gary

    Gary,

Sounds like it could be a video driver problem - in Safe Mode the default Windows driver is used - does the monitor also go into standby mode?

You could try re-installing the video driver in Safe Mode.

    Other suggestions >

F8 on boot up > Last Known Good

Don't know if System Restore works in Safe Mode - may be the same as Last Known Good.

See my post under F10 for Repair, but I guess you know that anyway.

Three ways, depending on your card - most seem to come with a CD with a suite of other things plus the drivers :

    1. Safe Mode > log on as Administrator > Control Panel > Add/Remove Programs > If your card software is listed there remove it - reboot to Safe Mode and re-install it

    2. Safe Mode > log on as Administrator > Right Click My Computer (if not on the desktop look under Start) > Properties > Hardware > Device Manager > Display Adaptors > Your card > right click > Update driver and follow the Wizard.

    3. If you are in the unfortunate position of only having a Recovery disk and no card CD you could try uninstalling the card - not physically - as above, but uninstall as opposed to update driver. Reboot and let Windows find the card - the driver should be in Windows driver files on your HD

But before you attempt any of the above :

I run Pro so am not sure if this applies to Home >

Right click MY Computer > Manage - or - Control Panel > Administrative Tools > Event Viewer > System and Applications.

Look for error messages - double click on message and in the detail box that pops up click on the button below the up/down arrows to paste the report to the clipboard - then paste any relevant messages here.
