Using the following: Mitsumi CR 4804 TU USB CD-R/CD-RW with latest firmware, latest version of Nero Burning ROM, Windows ME.

When I intend using on-the-fly copying to copy CDs I always use a progam called EndItAll to kill all programs running on my computer except Explorer and Systray before turning on my CD burner and running the Nero software. Everything runs fine until, for some reason, Windows decides that it needs to access the harddrive. This causes the Recorders buffer level to plummet and, in some cases, I end up with a buffer under-run.

The only solution so far that I have found is to burn at 2x. The Recorders buffer level still drops but not enough to cause a buffer under-run. The Recorder only supports a max speed of 4x but that is twice as fast as I can burn with the current problem, and it would make a considerable difference if I could burn at the higher speed.

Why is Windows accessing the harddrive when no programs except Windows itself and Nero are running?

Is it possible to stop this happening and, if so, how?

    Any help gratefully received.

    Mike.

buffer on your burner is prolly cached on the hard drive first. Is your "on the fly" cdrom source on the same cable as hard drive or the burner? Which is the master? Are those c:\windows\temp .tmp files deleted? What is the memory amount you have? Sounds like swp file paging C drive

    Thanks for reply.

Using a laptop so source CD-ROM and harddrive on same cable with harddrive being master. Burner is connected via USB port. I have 192mb RAM.

Started laptop today and ran EndItAll to kill all programs and left it with just Explorer and Systray running. After about 2 mins or so the harddrive was being accessed, this is with no programs running what-so-ever! Have an up to date virus program running normally so don't suspect any malicious programs to be present.

I know ya love this enditall proggy but if this is a TSR itself, hunting down running things, it may be your evil friend! Are you running an antivirus that is setup to check memory & the MBR every blah blah minutes? And is there a FINDFAST or OSA loaded in your startup? look in win.ini load= & run= line
also check 'start/run type msconfig [enter] look in the startup tab

All EndItAll does is kill programs that are running, once it has done this it exits itself. Basically, when I [CTRL][ALT][DEL] after EndItAll has been run the only programs shown as running are Explorer and Systray. EndItAll does not continue to run once it has exited. For this reason the Virus Checker (which is Grisoft's AVG Free Edition, by the way) should not be the cause of the problem as it to will have been killed.

Checked the other things you said but nothing untoward. Think you could be right when you said about the Swap file being accessed but with 192mb of RAM surely it shouldn't need to be used with so little running on the system?

This is just a SWAG, what about WinME's system restore feature?
