Go into Internet Options, click on the Security tab, with the Internet icon highlighted, click on Default Level, then Apply then Ok. Be sure to allow the ActiveX control to be downloaded when at the page.

    Snooker--
Are you getting the "Page Cannot be Displayed" message only at the Windows Update site?
Are you using the correct URL for the Windows Update site? MS changed it several months ago. It is now
    http://v4.windowsupdate.microsoft.com/en/default.asp
The following suggestions apply if the "Page Cannot be Displayed" message occurs only at the Windows Update site.
    1) This is almost the same fix as proposed by markp62, but try it. Put the Windows Update URL into your Trusted Sites. IE Tools|Internet Options|Security tab|Trusted Sites|Sites|enter the Windows Update URL. Click OK, Apply and OK.
    2) If still no solution. look here
    http://v4.windowsupdate.microsoft.com/troubleshoot/
Hope you can get to that site.
P.S. I really do not understand the problem about the icon (do you mean shortcut?) in the Start "Program ". Many of the items in the "drop up" Start Menu are found by right clicking the Start button and then Explore. Is the Windows Update shortcut in the Start Menu window? If not, create a new shortcut to C:\Windows\WUPDMGR.EXE there.

    Snooker--Sorry nothing helped.
BUT that re-direct to xml.overture looks suspicious. You may have spyware on your PC. Suggest you download, install and then scan with either
    Ad-Aware
    http://www.lavasoft.de/support/download/
    Spybot S&D
    http://security.kolla.de/
and it would not hurt to download and install SpywareBlaster (it requires no scanning)
    http://www.javacoolsoftware.com/spywareblaster.html
I personally use Ad-Aware and SpywareBlaster.
P.S. There is a thread over on VirtualDr with a similar problem and no solution as yet.
    http://discussions.virtualdr.com/showthread.php?s=&threadid=142320
P.P.S. I still do not understand the Start program icon problem, but maybe not important?

Yes, you have some sort of malware on your computer, I went to that link and noticed Keywords=windows.microsoft.com%2fisapi%2fredir.dll was part of that link. This particular page comes up as a Restricted Site per the IESpyads. Reg file I had installed a while ago.
I would recommend a going over with Spybot.

Snooker--I suspect Overture is causing your problems.
    1) Run a Find on Overture or Over Ture. (You might also look for xml.*) Do you find any references to it? Perhaps in Temporary Internet Files? If so, I would suggest putting these files in the Recycle Bin, but do not empty. Now see if you have any luck with Windows Update. If all OK, just keep those files in the Recycle Bin for a couple of weeks and see how your PC runs before finally emptying.
Also if you install SpywareBlaster as suggested earlier, it may neutralize any existing cookie you have from Overture, and I know it will prevent you from getting one in the future.
    2) If the above does not solve the problem, you could also open your Registry and do an Edit|Find on Overture (or Over Ture). Make a note just where any references are found and keep hitting the F3 key to continue the search. Now you could delete those keys after making a backup. But if you do not feel comfortable working in the Registry, perhaps first let us know what you find.

Hi ... I try the run command and i didn't find any of those 2 there ... I thinking it might just be easier to take me to the nutty bin because that what this u know what is doing to me lol... To be honest if i get directed correctly i will try anything once when it comes to the Registry i don't have any experience but hey i am willing to try and learn isn't that what its all about ... Beside i am thinking of just doing a fdisk format ... I am willingto try it out if you are willing to explain how so ??? What do i have to lose ??? LOL

First thing. Find out what kind of video card, sound card, modem, motherboard you have. Aida32 will help you on this. Get the drivers and get them on floppies, or know where to get them. If you have them so much the better.

Here is how to use fdisk and format to ready the HD for Win98.
Boot with a startup floppy, without CDROM.
    At A:\> type fdisk enter
press "Y" enter for large disk support
at FDISK Option select "1" enter
at Create DOS Partition or logical DOS Drive select "1" enter
    Verifying drive integrity, **%
press "Y" enter at do you wish to use the maximum available size for Primary DOS Partition
and make the partition active (Y/N)..? Press Y
    Verifying drive integrity, **%
you then get a message to RESTART your system for changes to take effect

If you want to partition the disk set the size of your primary, doing this will divide your hard drive into seperate drives, like C: and D: in one.
To create a second partition, you must create a extended partition and then create the logical drive(s) or other partitions.

YOU MUST REBOOT and format AFTER FDISK.

Press Esc and then Ctrl,Alt,Del, with bootdisk/Startup disk still in the floppy drive
At windows Startup Menu select without CD-Rom support
at A:\> type format c: (this will only format the HDD)
At WARNING, ALL DATA WILL BE LOST PRESS "Y "
Formatting and the size of your HDD (i.e. 19,09.84M for a 20Gig)
after format enter a name for the HDD or just press enter you can name it later
Press Ctrl,Alt,Del, to reboot with bootdisk/startdisk in floppy
    Select with CD-Rom support
    Install windows.
]Install motherboard drivers, if needed, first thing, then do the video card.

    Install after Format
    Using Fdisk and Format

    Snooker--
You do a Find by simultaneously clicking Alt+F (or Start|Find|Files or Folders) typing what you want to find in the line "Named ", making sure you have your Hard Drive (probably C: ) indicated in the line "Look in" and then clicking Find Now.|

OK Snooker, another thought. Are you running any kind of surf speed up program? If yes, several of them are predicated on converting url's to a digital address and when a page gets moved, you're SOL. If this is the case, post back and I'll give you the fix.

    ;)

Snooker--Glad to hear you found Overture files in the Registry. To back up what you are about to delete in Registry, you first click (on the Registry window) Registry|Export Registry File. That will allow you to create a .reg file whereever you decide. To restore those settings, if you have problems, you would right click on that .reg file and click Merge. I doubt it will be necessary, but this is insurance.
BUT did you first run a Find per my recent suggestion? You should delete those cookies (which I suspect you will find in Temporary Internet Files). No need to back them up.
