I've shot myself in the foot. I loaded Tweaks, clicked the option to not display my name in the Startup log on. Now I can't get in to the computer.

A Dell laptop running XP, with no floppy drive, so can't use the old safe boot to get into the computer. Have no clue how to get to C. Is there a safe boot option somewhere? Or another way to get around the log on option?

Have you tried booting to Safe Mode? - hit F8 immediately after you power up.

Under 'normal' circumstances the log on screen should contain your name and Administrator. At least Administrator should be there I guess - you will need your Administrator password to log on.

Hi Pete, thanks for that. I'm new to XP and suddenly realize how little I know about it. I didn't know about the f8 key.
I violated the first rule of computers: If it aint' broke, don't fix it. Now that I'm IN the computer, I don't know where to fix my problem... registry, whatever? I sure would hate to wipe it out and start over because of a hasty unchecking in a program! Thanks.

    Hello Mabanne,

"I'm new to XP and suddenly realize how little I know about it. I didn't know about the f8 key. "

This site is an online version of a manual for XP http://www.windows-help.net/WindowsXP/

Save the link, a lot here.

    Regards - Charles

Thanks for that Charles and Pete. I finally located the file and was able to "recheck" the option to show my name on the log on page, so all is well.
I'm too old and too experienced to make that kind of stupid mistake... but then, senililty sets in! My first computer was an IBM, monochrome, dual floppy drive with 64K memory that I paid $3,000 for. haha
    Thanks.
