I would like to learn more about swap files, page filing and virtual memory settings and just how they affect performance. Can anyone direct me to some literature or website that could help me with this?

    Thanks

Oh i forgot. I was also wondering if I was to partition my C: drive, move some files, then wipe C: and reinstall, can they be moved back and the partiton removed, thereby using all of the space with C: again?

All one partion ? YUCK !! Not a better idea.

Only a program such as Partition Magic will allow you to re-partition without data loss.

Then it depends on what files you want to move. Most programs will need to be re-installed anyway after a C: drive is wiped and the OS reinstalled . So even if you moved things back you would still need to re-install .

Program files can be moved and moved back but with OS files it is not a good idea.

Once you get the drive partitioned leave it that way. Put nothing but the OS and associated programs on C:. All other stuff on the other partitions.

Having everything on one drive is asking for BIG trouble and data loss if something goes wrong.

So my final answer to your question. re-partiton. andleave it that way. I have seem WAY too much stuff LOST when having only one partition. More than one partition increases Data saftey.

Use the search feature here and search for swap etc... You'll be reading for weeks to come.

What OPERATING system are you on?

Thanks for the info BillyBob. The files are audio. I'm using a laptop with alot of programs installed and very little space. I've put in quite a few audio files and dont have a burner. I want to wipe the drive rather than pick thru programs and folders and junk without losing those audios. I'm rapidly running out of space and am trying to come up with some way of accomplishing this. Partitioning and moving was all i could think of.

    Steve,
I'll do just that! Thought of it before I posted but then didn't think there would be THAT type of info. Using windows98.

Gotta get something cleared up here.

You say you are running out of space.

You want to wipe the drive but do not want to lose the audio files.

Partitioning is not going to give you any more room over all.

And if you are running out of room the only way you could move things would be to use Partition Magic. Create a small partiton and move as much as you can then do more resizng and move some more.

I think you may have to do some picking and choosing in prder to get room enough to make another partition.

One thing you can not do. And that is use FDISK. That will remove everything.

    BillyBob,

I hear ya. I thought I might easily take out enough to make room for a large enough partition to hold them, then not sure but was thinkin to use C:\format. Would that work? And what about moving them back? Stay with your first recommendation and leave them there? I've never worked with pratitioned drives before so this is new ground for me.

    Many thanks!

If you could make a partition large enough to hold the Audio files LEAVE them there. They will be safer.

As to the format part I would say no. Because unless you have ALL necessary drivers etc. you could have a problem. An dthere is always a chance that the OS will no bo back in correctly.

    Unless 100% necessary Forget Format

There is no problem working with partitioned drives. Just tell your Audio program ( or any other ) to look for/put on the d: drive instead of C:

Oh that beings up another problem that can come up by repartitioning now. Your CDROM letter with be changed. If it is now D: it will be E:.

In other words some thinking and PLANNING has to be done before repartitioning.
