    Hi,
I have a HP Pavilion XL-768 computer (with windows ME). I recently installed Windows 2000 after partitioning the hard drive.
The PC has a Connexant softk56 PCI modem.
I have installed the driver for Win 2K , after downloading it from the web. In device manager, it says "This device is working properly ". BUT when I try to do "diagnostics ". It says "Cannot Open Port ". Any help is appreciated.

PS: When I try using a dial-up networking connection using the Modem.. it says the same thing.. "Cannot Open Port ".

This PCI modem has installed itself on COM4 (a virtual COM port).

    Thanks in Advance!

Do you have a COM2 on your computer (physical one)? If yes, is it in use?

Yes. i do have physical COM2 Port. It says that COM2 is in use when I try to change the port in the "Modem Properties ". I dont think I have any device connected to the COM2 port though.

    Thanks & Regards

Ok, then try this: disable the physical COM2 in BIOS, then retry your modem. Hope it works...

    Hi,
Thanks for your response. Due to problems with service packs etc. I reformatted my HD with FAT32 (it was NTFS). I first applied the service packs and then installed the modem. It installed OK on COM3 (virtual port). In diagnostics, when I say "query Modem" it works fine and give me all the required messages.
BUT I now have another problem. When I try to dial out... The modem does NOTHING. It says "Dialing" but gives up after a min.
When it tries to "DIAL ".. if I pick up the phone.. I get the dial tone as though the Modem wasnt trying to dial at all.
Can U help?? The modem dials out perfectly when I boot thru Windows Me. Its kind of weird.

    Thanks & Rgds

Likely a driver issue. Modem troubleshooting site at http://808hi.com/56k/ might help you pinpoint the problem.

Well, This case I would suspect a port conflict with physical COM1.
Could you disable COM1 and try again?
