    Betty,

    Open OE>Tools>Options>Security Tab.

Uncheck "Do not allow attachments.......a virus ".

Here is a good place to look.

I have OE6 and don't remember how older versions work.

start->run "msimn /reg" without quotes. I found this on google search.

In OE6, all attachments are treated as possible virus if the box is checked.

I've a no-frills install of OE5 on Win Me, and do not have a file hidden or otherwise, named "mailclnt.exe ". I've set OE to ask me "you sure?" to help avoid possible viruses when I open attachments & use "restricted sites" zone; attachments open with no probs. Have you maybe added a mailer like Incredimail or Bartsmail that might be interfering with attachments? Or the settings in a firewall or AV program?

I could have hit the wrong key on something. This is the error I get when I try to open an attachment:

    C:\Windows/Temporary Internet Files\content.IE5\1GDUVXE6\ Fw_cute!.eml is not a valid Win32 Application.

What would happen if I deleted all my temporary internet files off my hard drive? I am always afraid I will delete something I need.

    Thank you, Betty

Temporary internet files prob isn't the problem, but go ahead and clear it out after you've saved the cookies you want to save for sign on to forums, newspapers, etc:
    - Deleting temporary internet files doesn't hurt; do it thru IE5 toolbar click "tools" > "internet options "> on the "general" tab under temporary internet files > "delete ", delete offline content? "yes ".

    - When i remember to, i delete the "content.ie5" numbered files to reclaim disk space, but not the "content.ie5" folder itself, cuz it just regenerates anyway. But since the error message contains ". . content.ie5 . . ." delete it too maybe that will solve the attachment problem. Deleting thru Windows Explorer is easiest.

-The .eml is an electronic mail file used by OE and others; do you have many .eml files with funny names in multiple folders? That implies the Nimda virus, you might want to run a virus scan to see.

And for grins, run SpyBot and Adaware. semi-regularly.
