I have just searched through this forum in case someone else has experienced the same problem - but no.
I have a NetComm Rave 56K USB modem which I had no trouble installing under Windows 98SE but I can't get XP to install it.
I installed XP on a formatted (C:) drive.
After I installed it, I attempted to set up a dial up for my ISP (via a setup program supplied by my ISP) but got an error message to suggest that there wasn't a modem.
I have a RAVE USB 56K modem which was attached when I installed XP.
I then went to 'control panel' add new hardware but the 'search for new hardware' returned NO NEW PLUG AND PLAY DEVICES FOUND.
I tried all sorts of things I could think of without success. I tried 'selecting from list' (instead of let windows find) and then inserted the CD which came with the modem and browsed to the folder on the CD for DRIVERS\WINDOWS_XP (yes the CD contains drivers for XP) and still could not set it up.

NOTE BEFORE I found that the modem (hardware) was not set up I installed a lot of drivers from the CD which came with my new (Gigabyte GA-9PE800 PRO) motherboard which include the following -

Intel Chipset Software Installation Utility - tells the operating system how the chipset components will be configured
USB path for WinXP - this patch can help you resolve the USB device wake up S3 hang up issue in XP
Intel Application Accelerator - designed to improve performance of the storage sub-system and overall system performance
Intel 72562/82562EX/8254OEM LAN driver - for Intel PRO/10/100/1000/Wireless Ethernet connections
    Realtek ALC101A AC97 Codec Driver - for Intel ICH/ICH2/ICH4 AC97 audio
USB Driver patch - this patch can help you to resolve some USB device issue on XP
Intel/NEC USB 2.0 Driver (1.0.0) - it is recommended that you use the Microsoft Windows update for the most updated driver for XP/2K

    Does anyone have any ideas?

    :( John

    Is USB enabled in BIOS?

Do any other USB devices work?

    Try another USB port.

Check the modem manufacturer's web site for some clues.

    John,
I have a Netcomm internal, not that there will be any similarity!
So if there is no Modem in the device manager try this. Turn on the modem. Download the latest driver.

    http://www.netcomm.com.au/one/dhp_i.html

Install the driver, I asume it is an exe file like other Netcomm drivers?
If it detects the Modem GOOD. If not search for new hardware. Disconnect the USB, shut down and power off. start up and try hot connecting the Modem after windows has loaded. USB devices should instantly be detected. Run the hardware wizzard again. If this all fails maybe a combination or change to the above MAY work. I had similar headaches installing someones HP ScanJet 4200C on XP home yesterday. Perserverance paid off eventually for me!
    Cheers,

    Paul

    Thanks all for your replies.
IN answer to one question. Yes the USB port is enable in the BIOS - the modem was detected, installed and worked under Windows 98 SE.
Last night I decided to 'bite the bullet'. reformat and reinstall but this time WITHOUT the modem connected. Once Windows XP was installed I connected the USB modem, Windiws detected new hardware and I was able to install it and it now works.
Strange that this did not happen with the modem connected when installing Windows XP. Maybe it had something to do with me installing USB drivers from the Gigabyte (motherboard) installation CD after I installed Windows the first time.
    Thanks again.
    :)
