    Help me please !!!

I installed the latest NS 7.1 last night and it seems to work fine with the exception of one problem which bugs the daylights out of me. I have set the HOMEPAGE to the Netscape home page for when I open the browser and it just will NOT stick. I have tried everything I know, setting it to blank page, setting it to last page visited, setting it to Netscape Home.Com time time and time and yep, multiple times again, and NOT of those settings will stick. No matter what I have done or what I try, when I open the darned browswer, it loads the *Welcome Congratulations*You have finished installing Netscape * page. Every time, it does it. I have tried typing the URL in the box in preferences and that does NOT stick either. As I said. The blank page settings will NOT stick, as the homepage, Setting it to the *Use current page will NOT stick* Setting it to the *Last page visited* with the last page being Netscape.com will NOT stick. I am at my wits end and if someone can't help me get the homepage to stay at at the Netscape homepage, then It is going to be booted off my 'puter' and NS. 7.02 put back on. All my settings were retained so it seems like it would work according to my users.js I have set up.

THANKS in advance for any and all suggestions, for this problem. And, has anyone else had this homepage setup problem? Is it a bug in the new NS?

    Hi Vanilla Ice,

Yes, I think it's a definitely a bug! Preference settings are very difficult to set, and to be retained. I've sent feedback on it, as I'm sure others have done. I hope you will do that also, by clicking on Help | Feedback Center.

    Here's what you can do:
    Edit | Preferences | Navigator
    Select: Home Page
Clear the Location Bar in the "Home Page" section

Add this script to your user.js file, assuming this is the Netscape site you want to startup with:

    user_pref( "browser.startup.homepage ", "http://netscape.com/ ");

Close Netscape, then restart. Your Netscape startup page should appear. I've just done this with three different pages, and all three worked.

Post back with your results, or if you continue to have problems.

    Ramona :D

    Hi Ramona,
Sorry to be so late in responding . Thank you for the Netscape help in setting the default homepage. It finally stuck at Netscape.com after several tries but for now, it is opening there and so that is one problem solved. I also have sent feedback to them as you suggested. This new V of NS seems to have some bugs.

    PROBLEM #2.....

Can you tell me how to change or set the timeout in Netscape? Some sites are slow loading for me, these are a some sites I visit on a regular basis and the new NS seems to timeout constantly,on these pages to that they do not have a chance to load.

Is there a string which can be modified or added to my User.js which will increase the timeout so that these sites can be given a chance to come up? Thanks for your help.

You might give thes lines a try in your user.js file:

    // http specific network timeouts
    user_pref( "network.http.connect.timeout ", 30); // in seconds
    user_pref( "network.http.request.timeout ", 120); // in seconds

    No guarantees ;) , but it's worth a try.

    Hi Vanilla Ice,

    If tranquilo's scripts don't work....

    Look in:
Edit | Preferences | Privacy & Security | Cookies | Manage Stored Cookies Tab
    Cookie Sites Tab
Have you by chance disallowed any of the sites you are trying to access?

    Close Netscape
    Delete these files/folder:
    history.dat
    XUL.mfl
    cookies.txt
    Cache Folder

    Start Netscape
    Enable: Accept all cookies
    Edit | Preferences | Privacy & Security | Cookies
Can you load the pages now?

You may wish to set your Cookie preference to:
Enable cookies for the orginating web site only
once you have solved the issue.
