Last week, without any provocation, 98 SE crashed. I ran a bootlog and after only a few successful loads it came to "Initializing Kernel..." I re-installed 98 SE though not "cleanly ". I renamed the Windows Directory then hid it (attrib +h) and proceeded with the re-install. All appeared to be going swimmingly but now I am encountering a plethora of "protection fault" and "page fault" like the following:

EXPLORER caused an invalid page fault in
    module <unknown> at 0000:60604587.

    Bytes at CS:EIP:

Int Exploder may be the main culprit but the whole system seems rather more unstabel than 'normal'.

Is this my penance for not doing a reformat and a clean re-install?

That may well be part of the problem. It is causing MAJOR confusion.

Also by remaning the Windows folder some program references will be in the old and all of the new will be in the new. Again Major confusion for programs.

When re-installing Windows over itself the better steps are.

1--DO NOT boot from the HD at all.
2--Boot DIRECTLY from a power off state to a 98 Startup disk.
3--Change the path so the it points to the Win98 folder on the CD. Or to the Windows setup files if they are on the HD.
4--Run setup and during the process make sure that Windows gets re-installed into the EXISTING Windows Folder.
    5--Have you product key handy.

This will re-install SE but at the same time preserve all ( or at least most of ) of you existing settings, Programs and data for same. And make it un-necessary to re-install all of ( or most ) of existing programs.

In all the years that I have been using Windows 3.1 up to and including 98SE this has not failed me yet.

HUH OH !!. I forgot something.

Before proceeding with my suggestions above.

MAKE SURE that any Anti-Virus program is DISABLED.

    Actually better if un-installed first.

    ESPECIALLY Norton AV.

BillyBob, Please expand on the path process. Before I did the re-name and attrib bit I tried re-installing from the Start-up disk (with CD support) and it didn't work. SE appeared to install correctly but when it re-booted it went into DOS and the Safe mode .

Before I comment further I need to know how many partitions you have.

    I am sorry.

I compleletly missed ( or forgot about ) this one. Thanks for the rap on the head in your recent post.

No Partitions ?? You do have to have at least one. I have to assume here that you only have the C: drive ( partition )

    5--Have you product key handy.

re #1 & #2. Should be self explaining.

re #3. When you boot to the Startup Disk is assigns a letter to the CDROM. I have to assume in your case it would be E: as D: would be the RamDrive that the Startup disk creates.

So the path ( command ) that I refer to would be E:\WIN98\setup

re #4. If Windows is already on the HD the overinstall MAY create a new Windows folder ( such as Window.000 especially if you boot form the HD). If this is the case then you will have two Windows setups which as you state will require a re-install of all software.

During the install process there should be a screen that comes up stating where Windows will be installed. This * May have to be * changed to C:\Windows. ( default ) Or what ever folder Windows is in at the time.

I have never had to be concerned about this when booting directly to the Floppy. But that is not to say that it can not happen. But when booting from a power off state to the floppy the Windows setup does not even know Windows is already installed and will USUALLY go directly to the C:\Windows folder.

And from there will not only rebuild Windows but pick up waht is already installed.

    BUT IT DOES NEED WATCHING

    PS
Can I use three Grandkids and one we are baby sitting for as an excuse ?
