How can I read W/ME CDROMs on an old 486/Win 3.1?

I need to write a CDROM on my Windows ME system and then read it on my old 486 Windows 3.1 system. Can I do that? Nothing seems to work. If I write a CDRW disk on my Win/ME system, then the 486 doesn't even recognize that the CDROM drive had a disk in it. If write a CD-R disk on my Win/Me system, then the 486 will read the directory and filenames OK, but won't read the files themselves. I would appreciate any suggestions or response on how or whether I can write a CDROM on my Win/ME system and then read it on my 486 CDROM drive. I know that the 486 works, because it reads the CDROMs that came with the 486 system just fine. Thank you for any response.

 

It could be that the 486 CDROM is not capable of reading CDR or CDRW CD's, especially if it is the original.

 

Thanks for your response. Is that right??? What kind of CDROM was used on those old 486's? It was purchased in 1995 so it is old.

 

The computer itself is not that old. Heck I have two older than that still going strong with Win98 or 98SE.

It is the CDROM itself that is the problem.

I have a CDR/ CDRW and the CD RWs that I make are only readable on the drive they are made on.

There is a good * POSSIBILITY * that if you BURN the files to a CD R Win3.1 * MIGHT * read them.

OOPS !! I see you said something similiar to that. I just did not read things completely.

All five of my CDROMs will read the BURNED CDs.

Thanks, Billybob, for your response, too. I did have the impression that my Win 3.1 OUGHT to be able to read these CDR's. But I have been wondering if I am doing something wrong in the burning process on Win/ME. I think I have tried all the possibilities but I also think there is some difference between data CD's and audio CD's that I don't entirely understand. I'm trying to burn a DATA CD. I guess I'll try again unless anybody has any better ideas.

 

One thing that I did run into with BURNED CDRs.

Either I messed up or NERO did.

Sometimes the Burn process did not close out properly.

Also difference in Burning Software * MIGHT * make a difference.

I myself use Nero.

But again it could be the actuall physical CDROM in Win3.1. I did run across that problem awhile back with a Win95 machine. I changed out the CDROM and it was then fine.
