I am new to most of this so please excuse any stupidity. I am running Windows XP Home Edition. I am using a Robotics Sportster modem and I only have one phone line in the house so my home phone is also the one connected to my computer. When in XP and someone calls my home phone number, Windows freezes and I have to hit the reset button to reset it, nothing responds. I do have two hard drives with Linux on the other one and have no problems when in Linux. Any help would be appreciated.

I assume you are online when the phone rings causing your problem, in your dial-up connection disable call waiting.

Do you by chance have another program that might be using the modem such as a fax program that might be set to auto answer incoming calls?

I ahve checked the Fax program and it is set to receive only. I do not have any other program that uses the modem. I might add that I never had any problems with Windows 98 and the switch on the modem (#5) is in the down position so it should not be picking up anything incoming. By the way, I do appreciate you trying to help. So far all the techs here in town that I have talked to do not have an answer neither have they had any problem like this.

Since it's not call waiting ----
someone in windows is trying to answer your phone the problem is who.

    Try hitting control-alt delete.
Click on applications tab to see who is running.
If can't recognize anything useful there click on Processes tab and stand back.
I'm still learning XP - amazed at amount of things running - but will eventually figure them out.

You might also click on task bar on bottom right corner - display inactive icons n see what's there to help discover the program.

I found the answer to my problem. The wake on ring setting in the bios was enabled. Onece this was disabled this fixed the problem. Thanks to every one that gave it a shot. A Radio Shack owner in Clinton was the first to come up with a probable answer and then a local friend I have as my Linux mentor helped the rest of the way.
