    CPU-AMD AthlonXP 2000+, Memory-256MB DDR PC2100, HDD-Maxtor 40GB

    Hello,
Cannot load Win.XP Pro. Pressed start button, get a full screen message. Basically saying," Windows did not start succesfully. Make a selection= Normal Start, Last Known Good Conifg., Safe Mode, Safe Mode with Command Prompt.

Using Normal Start & Last Known Good Configuration. I get the Win.XP splash screen. With the small diagonal window, with the moving dot. Dot moves across the window 7 times, then stops. Splash screen seems frozen.

Computer will not shut down using the Start/ Stop button. I have to cut the power. Probably the reason for the Windows message when I try to boot up?
    Any help greatly appriciated.

Sounds like a temp problem, if that AMD is close to or over 50 C all
kinds of trouble starts. Usually the temp can be found in the BIOS.
Anything else new or changed on the system like hard or soft ware? Will it boot into safe mode?

The CPU temp shows 38 C. Nothing new added before it started this. On the Full screen message saying, Windows did not start succesfully, Make a selection. Safe mode is one of the choices. I selected it, and It will start in safe mode.

Coyote - check your event logs. Should be entries there with more detail.

If you find some likely looking ones and can't figure out where to go from there, open an event, click on the icon below the up/down arrows, and paste the resulting text into a post.

Control Panel > Administrative Tools > Event Viewer - Application and System.

Double click an event for more detail - then follow Newt's post.

Ouch!! That looks horrible. But the date is 7/11/03 so nearly 2 weeks ago. Hopefully a one-time glitch of some sort. Those are mostly network/internet related items.

Try clearing all of your event logs and then rebooting to safe mode. Check the event logs for ANY errors or warnings and note the time you booted up.

If any of those are ERRORS, I'd like to see them.

Then try to boot normally and if it fails, boot to safe mode again and look for new errors.

Post any that look interesting from either safe mode or normal mode boot and if they are errors or bad-sounding warnings, post them even if M$ says no action needed.

Just in case you got some files damaged, try
start~run~cmd followed by chkdsk /r and reboot. When the chkdsk finishes boot to safe mode again and do
start~run~sfc /scannow to replace any bad system files with good copies. I doubt this will solve your problem but it might and it certainly won't hurt.

    Thanks for the info.

"This service cannot be started in Safe Mode " is normal for some services that are not designed for (or needed in) safe mode.

The other two plus the earlier one you posted are serious but are all over the landscape. That is often a result of bad or marginal memory or some other hardware problem. If you are comfortable inside the case and have more than one stick of memory, try removing one and starting up. If it still has problems, switch them and try again.

    Newt,
I will make the 30 mile run into town, and get another stick of memory. I will try it, and post back.

    Newt,
Since I last posted, I formatted Hard Drive, Reinstalled WinXP Pro, loaded nothing but ISP information for internet, went to SOYO flashed BIOS for latest update. When I bootup now, I get the Exact same thing I got before. Can any one help with this?

So right now it could be the BIOS update or the ISP software.
Can you boot into Safe mode or Recovery console to uninstall/delete the ISP stuff? Sounds like you booted up at least once into Windows or am I wrong? If it won't boot at all than clean install again and only add one piece of software/hardware at a time to narrow it down.

    :)

    clearmem,
The XP splash screen was freezing before I reinstalled XP. The splash screen froze after the new installation of XP, and before installing my ISP information. When trying to start XP, the screen freezes, I have to shut the power off then back on. The next time I start XP, Get a window" Windows did not start suscessfully. Make a selection =Normal Start, Last Known Good Conifg., Safe Mode, Safe Mode with Command Prompt. Sometimes XP will boot, sometimes not. No matter which selection I make.

I don't think you are dealing with a software/BIOS problem then, but instead a piece of hardware. I see you went after the memory with a new stick and it didn't change anything; what BIOS settings and M/B jumpers regarding clock speeds, etc? Do you have both sticks of ram in or just the new one like was suggested? Are you overclocking or have BIOS set to high performace mode vs. stable? Try taking out sound cards, NICs, SCSI cards, modems, etc. and see if it works then add them one at a time, Power supplies are also suspect.

    Hello,
Got the boot up problem fixed. It was the hard drive. Went through some diagnostic test with Maxtor, changed the drive, and everything works right. I want to thank every one for their help. You guys are great. Thanks again.
