I am trying to install and use the subject scanner with Windows XP and am having following problem. I do have the XP version of the driver installed. After installing the hardware and software I then select the source which is "Scan Manager ". This works fine, then I select "Twain ", works ok, then I select "preview" and here is the problem. It keeps telling me to turn the scanner over and unlock it, but there is no lock on the bottom or anywhere else, that I can see. It then gives a message to click OK after unlocking, which I do, but then gives the same message screen when I attempt to Scan or preview. Hope I have posted this to right section and will appreciate any suggestions. Thanks Jack

    locked

Somewhere on the back/bottom will be a LOCK! Look for the thing that may have an arrow ingraved with words lock/unlock like on the bottom of a mouse! My scanner. Microtek has a small lever on the bottom w/arrow pointing "open ". The darn thing is sure hard to find white on white!!!:)

    Scanner Driver

You very likely need the scanner driver for XP before your scanner will work. I found that the Win2k driver for a Visioneer 8100 worked on my neighbor's XP machine but I had to finally get the driver to install through the Device Manager in the System part of the Control Panel. Old scanners appear to be a real problem for XP. Good Luck! :)

Thanks. I have already installed the XP driver, but that made no difference. I really think it is hardware(scanner) problems. It seems that now it works, part of the time. When I turn off computer and back on again it will work then but next time I reboot the computer it will not work. Bought scanner thru Sam's Club here in San Antonio and didn't pay but $50, so not worth sending back to Visioneer to be worked on. They did tell me that it did not have the lock it keeps referring to and I could get an RMA on it. Currently I am looking at the Lexmark X73 to replace both the scanner and my Epson 77 printer. I really appreciate the suggestion though. Jack Lakehills, TX

    Scanner Prob

Well ... (When I wrote the first reply, I hit a 'funny' key and quit IE in the middle of responding.)

All I wanted to emphasize was that I thought the driver was really properly installed by the vendor .exe but it evidently wasn't. I found that in both my Win2k machine and my neighbor's XP machine that the 8100 driver install .exe didn't work until I ran the driver update from the Device Manager.

    Good luck, again.
