I'm running a Shuttle AK39N at this time. Had an Abit AT7 & returned it. So ordered the AK39N for son & hijacked it.
My question is, when they ship me a replacement fof AT7, will I have to reinstall 2-K?
From SAF forum had 1 no & 1 maybe.
    Thanks for help. BB

"IF" it boots up so you can install the new mobo drivers then you should be ok. Might do the all important backup first.

I'm a litle confused about what's going. Maybe this paste will shed a little light on it.
I need some help understanding this set up. Guy I let swap mobo has set it up only using 2 IDE channels. HHDS are set to master & slave. Why? I have 6. Should not the 2 HHds have been set to cable select?
He also said he had to reinstall 2k, but most of programs on here aren't in add-remove programs & won't work. So A clean sweep is in order. Then what? He also had I round cable left over that's why I think he set to M&S on one cable. Will pop case this wkend & look.
The more I read the manuel, The more ******* up I get. Was over 10 months ago when we install the 1st AT7. I can't even remember what I had for lunch must less what was done back then.
I think what has happened is he doesn't know this board.
I'll look inside tonight, & see if I can give a little better info. Guess I'm in a panic!

 I think, what I'm asking is help to set up my drives to take advantage of this board. If I remember right the HDDS, 2, dvd-rom & cdrw was each on its own cable. So were each set to cable select?
    Won't be using RAID.
No local help here. No use to take back to shop as they don't know this board. Thanks BB

Sorry to learn that you can't remember what you ate for lunch - unfortunately, I can provide little or no support in this regard.

As to your MB - it sounds like the shop you went to was "out to lunch ". Abit boards are among the best in the world but they aren't necessarily easy to set up properly. Your concerns about Cable Select vs Mater/Slave are somewhat unfounded based on the description of your setup, however, CS should give you max performance unless you have the particular IBM drives that were problematic with Highpoint and other controllers. If this "shop" set you up on IDE 1&2, chances are good that your Highpoint drivers were never installed properly and I'd be willing to bet that your VIA 4 in 1 drivers haven't been installed either. XP and Win2K have their own drivers but you'd be smart to use the official ones from Highpoint and VIA even when you get the "non-approved" message during an installation. Your best speed will be achieved using multiple IDE's as you have recognized, however there are several other factors that will have a significantly greater influence on performance.

Do yourself a favor - go to the following links and read, read and read some more. The answers to all of your questions can be found here. Good Luck.

    Thanks again. I have 6 ide channels. I have 2 HHDS, 1 80 & 1 20 gig, a dvd & a cd-rw & a floppy which has a round cable also.
I pulled a side last night & he has all on ide 1 & 2. The cables & wires are ******* up like a snake under a lawnmowed.
I have a full tower case to avoid **** like that & for air flow. I have 3 round cables & all the flat ones that came w/mobo.
I know I have to do a clean install of 2-k pro, but I want to have the best set up to take advanage of board.
So if you folks can help me w/that, I'll be as happy as a pig in ****. ;) BB
