Hi - and welcome to the board :)

Sorry to hear you have problems :(

FYI - explorer. exe is Windows Explorer - not Internet Explorer which is why you are getting the message re. re-installing Windows.

Which version of Windows are you running ?

Simplest way is to check in your BIOS that 'Boot from CD' is the first boot option, followed by Floppy and HD.

Turn off the m/c - insert the installation CD and reboot. Follow the instructions on screen to re-install Windows.

If you are using 98 or Me and have a start up disk boot from that, select 'start with CD support' and follow the instructions on the screen.

You will need an installation CD for either of the above - if you only have a Recovery disk your m/c should be set up to boot from cd, BUT be aware that some, not all, Recovery disks FORMAT the drive and your data, programs, etc will be lost.

Pete, thank you so much for your reply. Now i have a new problem. lol The monitor won't come on. When I start the computer i get a green lite for about 2 seconds and then it turns yellow again. I've plugged, unplugged until I'm nuts but it still won't come on. It's a little hard to reboot if you have no monitor. I found my windows 98 disc and reboot floppy. I also have a windows ME upgrade disc. I was using ME when this happened.
Now what do I do? I don't mean to sound stupid but I'm just extremely knew at all this.

    Longshot but...

Two days ago a guy a work had me look at his COMCRAP (no offense to COMPAC users, they have done an overkill job of giving me hours of misery & pain). Turns out that when I got home (may have been the booze) I plugged my monitor into the port on the motherboard. When all I got was a blank screen I assumed that his motherboard was gone. If I had been sober & actually looked, I would have noticed that there was another port for the video card & therefore the one that I was using had been disabled. You may want to check the back of the computer for another port.

The monitor is not getting a signal from the PC - as soon as you power up (green light) it goes into Standby (orange light) so no problem with the monitor.

The problem lies in the PC - when you power up do you get the power light on the case and when you boot does the hard drive light flash or come on steady to indicate hard drive activity? If no power light then the odds are that the PC internal power supply has failed - if you have the power light but no hard drive activity this may indicate a hard drive failure (or a faulty power switch). If you have both lights it is possible that the video card has failed.

If you feel competant open up the case and chech that all the cables and cards are seated properly.

    Post back with your results.

Dear Damien and Pete, First Damien, I checked and there is no other port in the back. However pete's reply makes more sense. My daughter installed a new video card last week. I forgot the name of it but she replaced the voodoo card. So I will have her check it out. Otherwise I will take it to the A to Z computer store and have the thing checked out. Pete, Yes I do get the lights on the computer in the proper order so Anna will take care of it for me. Thank you both so much. I love this sight and have recommended it to all my family and the girls at work. I will keep you all posted. In the mean time my niece has lent me her pc. She has a lap top she can use. Talk to you all real soon. Again, Thank you all.
