I'm using Netscape 4.9, and I have always preferred to use text only for email. I have my preferences set to "Use plain text editor when composing ", but there doesn't seem to be any way to force incoming email to display as text. I have two problems with this:

    1. On some, but not all, HTML email messages, when I go to reply to them, there is nothing quoted; I have to copy and paste the text portion into my reply.

    2. Just now I received a piece of spam which included a Flash animation, with sound; it began to play immediately when it loaded into the main email window. I find this scary.

So, is there any way to force Netscape Mail to display all incoming messages as plain text?

    acelightning,

That would be dependent on the sender. There is no option in Messenger for receiving "text only" mail. If you are receiving Newsletters in HTML, then request "Text Only ".

Have you tried "Forward Quoted" on those Mails which you can't quote...

If you click on the "grippy" which separates the Header and Message panes, those emails won't automatically open.

Yes, I've got "forward quoted" selected - but that seems to only affect forwarded mail, not normal replies. All the newsletters I subscribe to are "text only ", but some individuals I know use "stationery ", different colors, and fancy fonts in their email, even though I've asked them not to (some of them honestly don't know the difference, I think). Mainly, though, I was just spooked by the background music playing when I didn't have a browser window open. (And why would I want to go to a tech conference in Dubai, anyway?)
