    Hi,

I cannot download any chatroom applets. After trying, the window either has the mini colored icon in an otherwise blank window, with the status "Done" in the status box (icq chat). Or, the window seems to be stuck in communications (network data download) mode (yahoo chat). I cannot even download the yahoo alternate html chat applet.

I recently switched from phone to cable (Roadrunner) access. This may be a clue, although I can't be sure because I haven't been to a chat room for weeks or months.

Here is what I have done to troubleshoot it along with my system background.

I have been running I.E 6.0 for 2 years, it came with my window98 se. Chat rooms used to work 6 months ago for sure. I have never had AOL software or services on this machine.

Twice, with scripting errors 'enabled', I got a popup error with a fragmented message, something like '....method not available...'. This sounds like a Java related message. I have not been able to repeat this pop-up message because I can't remember what site generated it, although I have tried repeatedly.

I have read many posts and recommendations, and have double checked my internet/email options. I have put security options to 'low' and verified that all Java and scripting options are enabled.
I do have the box checked, labled "JIT compiler ...enabled', and I don't recall if I did that for my Jave class software or not. I don't even know what it means.

Several months ago I installed the Java programming language on my PC to take a Java programming class. It was installed in its own folder and I have never experienced any trouble with it or my browser. I don't have any good reason to suspect it is causing a problem, but I have no way of knowing.

I was suspecting that Roadrunner was the cause until I saw the above mentioned script error.

I don't know what to do next. Please help.

    I found it!

The problem is the SDK Java I loaded on my pc. Yahoo chat will not recognize anything except Microsofts products. I have to go to MS Java download site to reinstall MSVM for Java. Hope this helps the rest of you Java students out there.
