Microsoft has released Win2K SP4 for it's Premier Customers and will release the product to the general public presumably later today or tomorrow.

So you won't find it listed on http://www.microsoft.com/windows2000/downloads/servicepacks/default.asp

But it's posted on the MS download site:

    http://download.microsoft.com/download/e/6/a/e6a04295-d2a8-40d0-a0c5-241bfecd095e/w2ksp4_en.exe

This is the complete 129MB package. The express setup is located here

All cautions about downloading early apply :)

Microsoft has posted the Release Notes and a list of Fixes included in SP4.

    It's not yet "officially" released...

    Update Info!

    Yesterday I did the update.

Very smooth no problems at all with the actual install nor since.

    How I did it:

    Downloaded full SP4 to HD.

Preped by deep cleaning all temps and the registry. Full Virus scan, Chkdsk /r then Defrag.

Disabled all startups including Virus scanner and firewall. Unpluged Printer, network cable, USB.

On completion reactivate all startups and reconnect.

    Good to go!

    What I have noticed.

Boot and shut down, especially shutdown is much faster. Seems a little faster in normal use (snappier) but not much. Resources return to idle somewhat faster.

My WINNT folder (W2k Pro) contains 109 MB of uninstall sub-folders for accumulated updates and Service Packs. Since SP4 contains all prior updates what must I do to install SP4, retaining only it’s uninstall folder and deleting all others?

    No takers on this one?

It occurs to me that I could uninstall all updates in reverse order to remove all uninstall folders. Then I could install SP4 to yield only one uninstall folder.

I worry that applications installed after pre-SP4 updates could lose linkage with W2k. I would appreciate any comments.

    Joe.

    Sorry JSF

    Missed you somehow!

    Kill them all.

But do it this way if you want to be safe. Move them into another folder.

After you do the sp4 and all is well romove them. The sp includes all you have done anyway.

Welcome to the Best the windows BBS!

Well Malk that just does not appear to be the consenus!

It is a little early but so far there does not seem to be any more problems with SP4 than any other SP. And so far no serious ones at all.

It's a little hard to help with your description of the situation.

Perhaps you would enlighten us with a description of the results of your little adventure?

Did you take the steps I outlined in another message in this thread? Download to HD, Cleanup, chkdsk, scan for viri, defrag, terminate, unplug, disconnect?

    Hi mflynn,

It is a shame I did not know about this BBS prior to running the SP4 update as I now have mucho problems. I did this update as I have done numerous updates in the past, however, when the computer does its reboot, I get some sort of blue screen and error (which goes so fast I can't read it) and the computer gets stuck in this reboot attempt. I was able to get into Safe mode and remove SP4. The problem is that my normal internet connection (via cable modem) does not work. Fortunately, I am able to connect via a dial-up connection. Any suggestions? I have not been able to find any answers in the MS knowledge base and am not very happy at the prospect of having to reformat and reinstall everything.

    OK shiekie

Tell me more about you computer.

    Does everything else seem OK.

Do you connect directly to a Cable modem or to a router? What brands?

Is this connection modem or router, USB or to an ethernet card?

Does the cable modem/router show normal lights for a link?

If ethernet card does it have a connection light.

    Do this

Hang up modem unplug phone line(for this test)

    Command prompt

    type

    ping 127.0.0.1

    then

    ping yahoo.com

Let me know the results of both.

    while still at command prompt

    type

    ipconfig /all >c:\settings.out

This will produce a file called settings.out, it will be in the root of c:\. Open it with Wordpad copy it and paste it into a message back to us.

Then only after you have sent it back to me do it again like this

    ipconfig /flushdns

    then

    ping yahoo.com

Let me know the results of this.

    Your move!

    Mike

    Hi Mike,

Thanks for the quick reply. The strangest thing is that after I printed your instructions (and unplugged then replugged the NIC cable) my cable modem connection began working again. Anyway, here is the info on my system, in case it helps someone else.

My system is a Dell Optiplex GX110 with a pentium IIIE 533Mhz CPU with the Intel 810 chip-set. have 512MB RAM on-board. Both the video and NIC are integrated into the motherboard. I have an Ensoniq ES1371 sound card, 40X CD-ROM, 48X16X48 CD-RW, 2 - Maxtor HDD's (C: is 20GB and D: is 12GB). This was a clean install of Win2K Pro (5.0.2195 SP3) done on 4/30/2003.

Prior to the connection starting to work again, everything else did seem to be fine. I connect to the cable modem (a DOXport COM21 provided by Comcast) via a Linksys Wireless Access Point router (BEFW11S4) although I am hard wired to the router, not wireless. The modem did show the normal lights for a link and the NIC does have a connection light (which was lit) Earlier, I did remove the NIC and did a restart to reinstall it, but this had no positive result.

I did both "ping" tests you requested and received positive replies both times. Here is the "settings.out" contents:

    Mike,

As you probably expected, I had no problem pinging Yahoo. The real question is what happened when I ran the SP4 update earlier? Is there a bug in this update or even worse a virus?

Probably no virus. Hard to say what happened.

    Sounds like a cable problem.

    No need to do /flush

Sounds like it is ok now.

If you do the SP4 again do as I advised above.

    Good night,

    mike
