I have three XP Home machines. I set up the first with a few scheduled tasks, including running an AdAware scan. After testing that the program would open, I added a few extra characters (+c /auto /log "C:\Lavasoft\Ad-aware 6\Logs ") to get it to not only open, but run.
For the record, the AdAware program was located in the list that shows up at the Add Schedule Task wizard.
On each of the other two machines, the AdAware program was not located on the initial list, but was found by navigating the wizard to the appropriate Program Files folder.
I tested it and it was able to run (from within scheduler), but when I cut and pasted the exact same extra characters and then I tried to get it to run, I got the error message "Could not start mentioning that the user or password were incorrect ".
Both of the other machines have Task Scheduling Service set as automatic and started.
Can anyone guess why the other two can't run scheduled tasks? The other two can run tasks, as long as they were found on the list presented by the wizard, but fail when they are either navigated to or appended with extra characters.
    Thanks in advance!

One more item, the failure also occurred when I cut and pasted the launch icon to Scheduled Tasks and then added the extra code.

LOL (at myself) - I took a look at mine to make sure before I posted a response. Dang thing had failed to run for the past 4 months. But all better now. So glad you posted the question.

Since you are running the home version and I've never seen it, I hope the info from Pro will work. There seem to be a number of differences in the security setup between the two versions.

The wizare will have created a scheduled task so all you need to do is go into properties and modify that.

    - Check the path statement. In fact, remove the one you have and replace it with a copy from a working desktop shortcut.

    - Make sure it is running as a user with admin rights to the PC and if the user account has a password, put it in. Since I'm not even sure if it will run without a password on the account, if you don't use one then create a new user with a password just for running tasks, give it admin rights to the PC, and use it for the schedule for ad-aware.

Mine that now runs automatically, full/deep scan is as follows:

    "C:\Program Files\Lavasoft\Ad-aware 6\Ad-aware.exe" c:\ +A +1

    Thanks for replying, but...

I have successfully used Schedule Tasks on the two "other" machines. I can schedule and run AdAware (for this discussion I will focus on the older version, not the new one relaeased yesterday).

The problem is when I cut and paste the extra characters (which are slightly different from the ones you posted) the tasks fails to run.

I added a common 'problem' on the two "other" machines that neither lists AdAware in the Wizard's setup box.

My main machine which does list AdAware in the Wizard's set up box can run AdAware as scheduled both as it appears as well as when the extra characters are added.

The same problem seems to occur on any program not initially found in the set up box, but found when navigating to either program files (as in the case of The Cleaner) or the //system32 folder where I find the DEFRAG program. The main machine lists these programs and runs flawlessly from Task Scheduler, but on the two other machines, I can not.

    Any ideas?

    Newt,

Where'd you find the command-line options you show in your above post? I found nothing about them in the freeware version's help file. I have multiple partitions, so it only "partially" works for me, but it DOES work!

    TIA!

LarryD - it sounds like you may have a permissions issue with the user account that is trying to run the job on the problem PCs. Did you try creating a new user, putting it in the Administrator group, and having it run the job?

Also, the wizard set the task up pointing to C:\PROGRA~1\Lavasoft\AD-AWA~1\Ad-aware.exe on my PC at home and the one at work. Neither would work with that path but did work fine with "C:\Program Files\Lavasoft\Ad-aware 6\Ad-aware.exe "

RASelkirk - I have the free version as well and in the help section under the command line parameters is where I found the switches.

How do I scan but not clean

I see that +a scans and cleans, what do I put in if I want to scan (without cleaning), then allow me the option as to whether or not I want to clean the item, thanks!

Near as I can tell, the free version doesn't offer that option. Or maybe there is a switch and they left it out of the help section for the free one.

You might want to post the question to the security section of the forum since I think there are at least a couple of posters who run the professional version and they could tell you what they find.
