    Hi Frenchman
Your sure a tough cookie for sticking with it this far, I wish it had been a quick fix!!

tell Us the brand name and model of this PC and a little history(age)Like have you added a video card --memory and such.
one chip or two and amount
You could also gather some info for the pros here..
Go start programs>>>.to system information then components , problem devices, post it here, or just look in device manager ,(expand all the trees )for any exclamation points and note the error codes, if any.

There are some small programs to download that will test memory
Online to,But from what Ive seen they wont find any problems when its erratic sometimes,, are you comfortable taking the case apart.

can you still here the fans running

    Grrr Grrr GRRR!!!!
I am so sick of everyone saying "oh the only way to fix ME is to get rid of it." Ok, yes, XP is more stable. But ME is not that bad of an OS once you get the proper drivers and updates. I've had it for 3 yearsnow and itworksmuch better than 98 ever did..but to each his or her own...
As far as the freezing issue, have you tried going to themanufacturers of your drivers after you use your recovery cd? Sometimes they ship with drivers that are buggy or obsolete. I had to update my v ideo card drivers for instance. I would try doing that. Maybe a driverconflict or obsolete driver is causing the freezing problems.

I am so sick of everyone saying "oh the only way to fix ME is to get rid of it." Ok,

The only way to fix a messed up ME is to remove it.

I have read somewhere that even Microsoft itself does not care for ME.

ME is not that bad of an OS once you get the proper drivers and updates.

With ME and an OEM machine that may be a VERY TOUGH thing to do.

Windows ME is NOT a user friendly OS. If it is setup a certain way IT WILL NOT ALLOW the Users to make changes. That is why me and Windows ME parted ways VERY quickly. Windows 98 SE is by far much more solid and MUCH easier for the USER to control.

I am running ( or can run ) both 98SE and XP on this machine. And I have yet to see any great difference. In either speed or reliability.

But as you says " to each his/ber own "

Number one. That may not work on an OEM machine. The drivers may need to come from the Manufacturer OF THE MACHINE. Not the Video card maker.

Number two. The latest and greatest diivers MAY NOT BE suitable for the system. That even applys in Windows SE with certain Video cards. And I personaly have one that requires video driver that are at least two generations old to even work let alone properly.

OH BTW. I had the same dam Vidoe driver problem in XP Pro until I FINALLY found the right ones. ( from the MS update site at that ) Nvidia drivers from Nvidia would NOT work properly.

There are also other things that make or break Video driver. Directx is one. IRQ confilcts is another. And if vidoe drivers aare not right it can mess up the whole thing.

Audio problems can also cause a mchine to freeze.

OH BOY. !! that brings up a question. Does the machine in question have an INTERNAL or builtin MODEM ? They have been know to cause many. many problems. They can cause IRQ conflicts with ( mostly ) sound or Network cards. The modem itself may work but still be causing problems for other things thereby causing the freeze ups.

I have fixed more than one freeze up problem by removing the Internal Modem.

And if required MOTHERBOARD drivers can be involved. They also may have to come from the machine maker. As some of them DO modify a Motherboard. And with some Motterbaords if the MB drivers are not installed as the FIRST item of business after the OS then they may not even work properly.

The drivers on the recovery CD may be MODIFIED to suit the machine that they were installed in. And ANY changes to said machine may cause problems for the recovery CD. FOR ANY OS

I do think you have a driver issue here, either video or modem. If you have replaced either one, and you ran the recovery cd, I believe you got the wrong ones shoved on you, like it or not.
Anything with yellow splats show up in Device Manager?
