This is getting somewhere, as you have hardware devices conflicting with a Interrupt ReQuest resource.
It doesn't have a place to connect.
Troubleshooting Device Conflicts with Device Manager
    Good about the Video Adaptor.
Did the guy give you the drivers for the sound card and for the modem?
Do you have a file named Serwave.Vxd in c:\windows\system?
The Wave Device allows a voice modem to send and receive audio to the sound card via the system bus (no cable is needed between the modem and sound card. Most new modems has this capability and your sound card could be lost without it. This could be the double entries.
You need to look in the BIOS, and see if anything has been done to the Secondary IDE Channel. Press Del when the system is starting to get there, the CMOS is where you want to go. Note if the CD is connected to the Primary Slave or to either Secondary.
Daizy and Alice [two regular members] here would have a laugh at that. Sure could use their help here.
You say that windows used the CD, nothing happened until the CD was in?

    ok...

    no I don't see any serwave.vxd

I have noticed though a program in the list that I didn't put there called Aptiva Mwave with Direct Sound 33.6

I "m not 100% sure what you refer to with BIOS and CMOS but if I read you right then the CD is in the primary but if you can direct me further I'd like to double check that!

Love to have any help I can get so if Daisy and Alice have any advice I'd love to hear it!

and yea.. it read the CD as I put hte CD in and it kept going.. makes me more confused then ever!!

This Aptive Mwave was the installation drivers for your old modem/sound card you mentioned.
To direct you further with the BIOS and the CMOS, this is where Aida comes in.
In Aida, on the left side expand Motherboard by clicking on the + sign, then highlight BIOS. Look to the right and you will see BIOS Message, post that here.

Then go down to Devices and expand it. Highlight Physical Devices, and look to the right. Look for a speaker icon, hopefully Aida is reading the sound card and it identifying it. Post what it say there. Now highlight Device Resources, scroll down and see if Aida says anything about problems in there.

Then go to Storage and expand it. Highlight Windows Storage, post back if you see a Primary and Secondary IDE controller and whether or not it says Dual Fifo there. Your CD should be listed there also.
Now highlight Optical Drives, anything show up?

Back in Device Manager, on the hardware listed with Yellow splat, double click them, then click on Resources tab, on the bottom it will say Conflicting Devices, post them here and which ones it says it is conflicting with.
Also double click Computer at the top of the list in Device Manager, another window opens. Click on Interrupt Request [IRQ] post what it says there for IRQ 14 and IRQ 15.

Let me think on this, in the meantime, go into Device Manager, double click Sound Blaster Pro. When the window opens, look to the bottom, it will say Device Usage, and put a checkmark in Disable in this Hardware Profile. This will create a red X, that is OK. Reboot and see what happens.

Here is something to check to see what kind of video card you have as it has a yellow thingie.
Open a DOS window (go to Start, Run and type command and hit Ok),
then, at the prompt type debug and hit enter.

Your normal prompt will go away. Now type D C000:0040
(those are zeros, not the letter O) and hit enter.
You should see information regarding your video card on the
right side of the screen. Post back what it says there.

If it's meaningless, hit D and enter again.

After you find your video card information, hit Q and enter to get your prompt back, then type exit to close the DOS window.
By the way, what loads up in the C:\Config.Sys and C:\AutoexecBat files? Start\Run type in Msconfig and press enter, click on those tabs at the top to see them.

nothing happened when disabling the sound blaster

on looking around in there it seems the other device the MPU one is still trying to use the IRQ... now to my thinking disabling the blaster should have freed IRQ 05 but then I'm outta my realm in that area

the video card is 40 VGA BIOS version 1.00d

just a note to remind you that that device is listed twice

I think you need to boot up in Safe Mode. Press F8 repeatedly when you see Starting Windows 98 when booting the computer, you will get a start menu. Then choose Safe Mode. If you are unable to get this to work to Start\run type in Msconfig and press Enter. When System Configuration Utility opens, click on Advanced, then put a check mark on Enable Startup Menu.
While I am thinking of this, Start\Run type in Msinfo32 and press Enter. When Microsoft System Information opens, go to the toolbar and go to Automatic Skip Driver Agent, and enable anything listed there.
Reboot and then choose Safe Mode when the menu comes up.
Go into Device Manager, if something is listed twice, remove them both, any yellow things remove them. Then reboot, allowing Normal.
I am almost at a loss for an explanation, other that if this is the CD rom that came with this computer, it is failing and causing all the problems. The date from your BIOS would indicate the system is about 9 years old.

    Well I give up!

I did what you said... when I came back up in normal it was reading that there was a CD Rom but it wasn't accessing the CD's... and it can't be the CD rom as it's barely a year old... then I did a reboot as things were running far too slow... looks like it'll need to be wiped and reloaded again anyway as there seems to be something up as it's already using half of the storage space and I've not put half of the programs back on!

it was working fine before I had disconnected things to get the other puter loaded with the programs from the CD's.. obviously I should have just left it for the professional and fork out the cash...

now I have refork out cash to get this one working properly.. either way the sound wasn't working and then I have to get the other one going.. it'll cost more.. it's an old puter too but I'm hoping it'll be good enough to run a CD burner... time will tell as it'll take time to get the funds together to get things done :(

***** being on my own with the kids in more ways than one at times...

oh well.. thanks for all you help anyway

It would have been good to mention that in the first place. Well, anyway, good luck to you.
