I suspect that someone may have a quick registry patch for this, but I can't seem to find one anywhere, so I figured I'd post and see if any of you other gurus out there happen to know this...

In Win9x and even WinNT (with a certain level SP), you had the ability to open a command prompt (Win95: dosprmpt, WinNT: cmd) and the nice thing was that it would always open to whatever your PWD was. For example, if you were browsing a folder off the root of the drive called TEMP\OTHER, when you opened the command prompt, it would open with C:\TEMP\OTHER as your PWD.
Try as I might, I haven't been able to find how to enable this functionality in WinXP, and installing SP1 didn't help either.

Does anyone know how to "fix" XP so it'll let me do this? I'm really getting tired of navigating somewhere in the GUI, then opening a cmd prompt and having to navigate there again (although, the linux like "tab" completions are nice...).

    Thanks in advance!

See here under C = Command Prompt - add to right click.

    Hey Pete..

    Thanks for the quick reply!

I already have the info about the "Command prompt from here ".. that was one of the tweaks from the Win9x collection, if memory serves. I'm still looking for a way to have the command prompt open in the directory which corresponds to the folder which last had focus before I started the command prompt.

I may just have to settle for the right-click solution... but hopefully not. Time will tell... :)

Not what you were looking for but could be a help.

CCD.cmd describes a script you can create that adds a useful command to your system for use within a CMD window.

Example: CCD somewhere would take you to any location matching somewhere as part of the path if somewhere unique. If more than one, it presents a list you can select from.

Thanks Newt.. CCD.CMD is less typing, that's for sure. I'm still analyzing it to see how it works. At any rate, at least I won't be wasting as much time trying to remember those long paths.

I'd be interested to hear a first-hand evaluation of the script. I've read about it but don't work from a cmd prompt enough these days to make it worth trying.

However, some others on here do and would probably like to hear if it's worth putting on their system.
