What makes you think you need "Win98 SP2 "?
I am going to show tremendous ignorance here, but I am not aware of anything called "Win98 SP2 ". There were several updates to Win98FE (first edition v 4.101998) and I think these updates should still be available to you at your Windows Update site
    http://v4.windowsupdate.microsoft.com/en/default.asp
if you have not already installed them.
Or you can look here (see the reference to a Customer Service Pack from around 2000)
    http://www.5rocks.com/smartcomputing/updates_w98.htm
And then there was Win98SE (second edition v4.10.2222)) but for that you had to buy either an upgrade CD or the whole new version. (There was a time you could buy the update for download on the web but that is no longer the case.) And now the upgrade CD is also no longer available from MS, but I suspect you could find it at local computer store or on EBay.
Do you perhaps mean Service Packs for Internet Explorer?

I just click on start, windows update, or go through IE, via tools, win upddate and let it do it's thing. I also haven't heard of a win98 SP2. Load the updates, and if you have further problems, post them back. If you're having specific problems, post them, with as much detail as you can.

Just a wild guess, but I think what you are looking for is Internet Explorer 5.5 Service Pack 2. No longer available from MS. Get it from this link.
    All versions of IE
Why not get Internet Explorer 6 Service Pack 1. It is newer. Just go to the Windows Update Site and get it.
What do they say? Any blue screens? If so, what do they say?

Str200 - I guess you got exactly what you bargained for. Software at the right price - why worry whether or not it works? So what if it crashes?

This person who advised you need a service pack#2, doesn't know what they are talking about. Get the original installation disc or get a new friend with better access to better software.

    Windows 98 SP2

I too am confused by the ref to Win98 SP2 ... I'm buying the latest PaintShop Pro v.8 and the sys req state

    "Microsoft Windows 98 SP2 or 98 SE SPI, NT4 SP6a, 2000, ME, XP "

So I was trying to find SP2 but it does not appear to be real. ... what gives ?

    Yes Sir -

I'd like to know too. Maybe there really is something to it - just never heard of the thing. Who knows?

Will say I've heard Billy Bob's dissertation on update versus upgrade versus 98 versus 98se many times since he got religion and converted to SE. Its refreshing and must reading for those with questions re: what version is what.

At the same time, must add that the best 98 patch MS ever issued for the original version was SP12098b which preceded the official release of SE. Problem is, it was never released to the public and there is an expiration date, so one needs to know what they are doing to disable it. Rock solid.

    ;)

I crashed my desktop machine a couple of weeks ago and have just finished reloading it - but of course its back to a bare W98 operating system. Cute in a retro sort of way, but I would be really interested in updating it with any W98 upgrades if possible. I use Netscape not IE. I have checked with the MS upgrade site, but didn't see anything that looked right to me. Any pointers would be most appreciated.
    Thanks

If you are using the original Win98 then I would suggest upgrading to Win98 SE if you can ind it somewhere.

SE is just 98 with all of the patches, upgrades, better USB support and better and a little more solid over all than the Original. But still at the same time handles about the same.

    Or Windows XP.

    Deffinetely NOT Windows ME.

If by some chance you are using any DOS software I would stick with SE. XP will handle DOS but sometimes not as well as SE. It is not really designed for using DOS.

Thanks for that BB. I would go to XP but I still have a couple of hardware items that are getting old and XP won't even look at the software for them. It simply refuses to load it. I'll start hunting for SE second hand somewhere.
    Cheers

Kotare--I do not know the basis on which you have decided that the updates and patches from the Windows Update site are not "anything that looked right to me ". I reviewed my download history and see at least 10 updates for Win98 that look desireable--mostly in the security area. Of course there are many more that deal with IE or OE and some are cumulative so you only need install the latest.
In short, I would recommend installing anything marked Critical that is offered to you at the Windows Update Site.
There also is this site, but unfortunately it only goes back to June 2000.
    http://www.microsoft.com/windows/ie/downloads/critical/default.asp

Now, I know BillyBob will disagree with this, but unless you need somewhat superior USB and Network Connectivity performance, I would suggest that it may not be worth much effort to upgrade to Win98SE. I gather you had been satisfied with Win98FE until the crash, which suggests the improvements mentioned will not affect you much if at all.

Welshjim, thanks for that. Sorry for the delay in reply, I've been away. I have decided not to do anything more with the system. Its running sweetly, seems very stable and everything is working fine so I think I'll just leave it alone. If it takes another four years to get so messy that I crash it, well that's fine and just means I should do some more regular maintenance.
    Thaks for your advice.

I do but still do not disagre.

SE more solid in other ways also

But I know that 98SE does contains all of the Updates, patches etc. that may be required to keep FE running well and up to date. No Service packs or anything. Although there are a few Windows Updates still needed.

That is the biggest reason I went to SE. One CD install and that is it. It was not due to problems. Or that FE would not do what I required cause it did.

And SE is for sure 2000 compatable right out of the box.

But I do agree to " if all is well " leave it as is.

If problems develop then do something else.

Sorry Charlie, this is one Tuna that just won't go away - SE is far superior to the initial release.

How good the Tuna tastes has a lot to do with the Name on the can that it s packed in.
