Code 22 means A device is disabled

To resolve this error code, enable the device. To do so, follow these steps:
    1.Select Start> Setting > Control Panel, then double-click System
    2.Select the Device Manager tab
3.Double-click the category for the device you want to enable, and then double-click the device
4.In the Device Usage box, select the check box for the configuration in which you want to enable the device
5.Click OK, and then click Close
6.Shut down Windows, and restart your computer

If this doesn’t work, try removing the device in Device Manager, then re-detecting it using the Add New Hardware wizard. If the problem persists, try a clean boot to rule out software interference.

    Hope this helps.

I'm not sure of the exact steps you used so I'll ask did you complete the installation and then do step 6 as below??

6.Shut down Windows, and restart your computer

If You did then I'll have to ask did you follow it up with the below??

If this doesn’t work, try removing the device in Device Manager, then re-detecting it using the Add New Hardware wizard. If the problem persists, try a clean boot to rule out software interference.

I need to know because it may be that you're experiencing a problem with IRQ Holder for PCI Steering.

    Hi irdreed,

I have just looked at the properties every single item in the list and none are diabled, all report as "this devise is working" none show as being diabled?

So I have just run "hwinfo /ui" again, and still get the same results; it would help if I knew what the device is that shows as being diabled, any clue in the text?

    Win98...

In your first message You showed this:

    This Device Has a Problem: Code=22 (0x16)
    This device is disabled.
DeviceDesc: ACPI IRQ Holder for PCI IRQ Steering

Now with Code 22 stating that a device is disabled, and with Device Desc stating that ACPI IRQ Holder for PCI IRQ Steering is the device it tells me that this is the Device that is disabled.

So I suggest You try this since it appears that your Computer has IRQ Steering disabled.

    1. Click Start, point to Settings, click Control Panel, and then double click System.
    2. Click Device Manager Tab.
    3. Double click to expand the System Devices branch.
    4. Double click PCI Bus, then click the IRQ Steering tab. There you should see a box labeled "Use IRQ Steering" and it should be checked.

(This Tab shows if IRQ Steering is Enabled or Disabled)

    Hope this helps.

    IRQ Steering

    Hi irdreed,

Followed your instructions and have listed the findings below. very odd that it advises IRQ is enabled tho.

    PCI Bus

    Use IRQ Steering (is checked)
Get IRQ Table using ACPI BIOS (is checked)
Get IRQ Table using MS specification table (is checked)
Get IRQ Table from Protected mode PCIBIOS 2.1 call (is NOT checked)
Get IRQ Table from Real mode PCIBIOS 2.1 call (is checked)

    IRQ Routing status.

    IRQ Steering enabled
IRQ Table read from ACPI BIOS
    IRQ miniport data processed successfully
    IRQ miniport loaded successfully

    win98

    Old_Salt_Oz,

(Ok??!! what is it we have here..............hmmmmmm very interesting!!)

I jut did a hwinfo /ui on my brand new system and I got the same results as you state. I am having no problems with any of my devices.

I'm going to look into this further and see what I can come up with. So I'll get back to you later.

Hope someone else sees this thread and maybe can give us both some advise.

    Old_Salt_Oz,

    Got It!!! See this KBA.

    http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;EN-US;q272291

    It says that the:
    CAUSE
This behavior can occur if you change hardware in your computer and the IRQ holder is no longer required. IRQ holders for PCI steering are listed with error code 22 when they are not in use. Although IRQ holders for PCI steering that are not in use are not displayed in Device Manager, the System Information tool displays them.
    STATUS
    This behavior is by design.

I know the reference is for Win ME but this proves to be true also for Win98.
So Basically we have a Bogus Error. This solves it I guess.

    Thank you irdreed

For solving a very odd error, my computer runs fine and fast, but the error message you kindly solved was a bit of a worry.

    Thank you irdreed.

Top job, well done, keep up the very good work......
