I'm thinking of replacing my IBM Mwave with a Soundblaster Card and am considering the following 3 models:
    SB PCI 16 SB4740
    SB Live OEM
    SB PCI 512
The card will go into an existing PCI slot. Does anyone know about the quality of these cards?
I don't need 3-D sound or anything fancy, just good stereo sound from a couple of small speakers and some good midi sounds to go with some music composing programs. Thanks.

    ackerberg,
When I took out the mwave out of my Aptiva I had the Live Value card in it for awhile. Had no problems. Another card you can find at a good price that I used and it worked too, was the Turtle Beach Montego II Quadzilla. The only thing is if you are going to use 4 speakers with it you need to 2 slots as it has a daughter board for 2 speaker and S/PDIF output. I don't know if you have another modem installed in your system but if you don't, you have to get that too when you take the mwave out.

    Thanks Russ,
I've had a 56K modem in the machine for about 2 years but the Mwave modem still works with Faxworks. I only have 2 speakers and do not intend to get additional ones. I don't think the SB sound card you have is available now, but do you know anything about the ones I listed?

    Hi ackerberg,
The SB Live Value is still available. It's new name is SB Live Value 5.1. As the name implies it supports a 5.1 speaker system if you have one. Just bought one last week ($36 at a local computer shop) for my daughter's computer. Actually, I put the new 5.1 card in my machine and she got my old Value card :)

I agree. You can't go wrong with the SB Live Value card. Its compatible with everything and its very cheap.
