Help! I recently upgraded to WinXP, and it started telling me my password was going to expire, even though I never set one. I read on Microsoft's on-line support page (item #810877) that you can reset it, but the password finally expired this morning and I can't get into my computer anymore! Is there any way I can bypass the password screen and reset it? HELP!

I read somewhere that the password would expire within so many days.

If I can not get it changed, reset or someone knows how to prevent it or what ever and I have the same experience XP WILL NOT stay on this machine.

I think that proceedure is ABSOLUTLELY RIDICULOUS and A**ININE for a Home machine.

    passwords

It's easy enough to prevent, just follow the directions on the Microsoft page. I just kept forgetting to check, and it finally "expired" this morning and now I can't get into XP to follow the directions on the site. There must be some way to get in a back door and reset the password... anyone?

Even though it may be easy to prevent and I will check into it, I still think it is a ridiculous and stupid requirement on a home machine.

Basicly the only reason I have XP at all is for learning something new. Not that it does anything more or better for me than 98SE. So I would not miss it one bit. Just the $199 I paid for it. That is the only thing the MIGHT keep it on my machine.

In fact I have the 98SE HD in service right now. And the reason I did that is to see what ( if any ) differences there might be.

    I see NONE.

Control Panel > Administrative Tools > Local Security Policy > Account Policies > Password Policies and set maximum password age to 0 (zero).

It's a nuciance, true, but easily overcome.
    Log on as Adminstrator.
Usually, one would log off, then if Adminstrator is NOT on the logon screen, hit CTRL+ALT+DEL (sometimes twice) and then type in "Adminstrator" and leave the password blank (unless you set up a password for Administrator when you installed windows).
Go to Admin tools, Computer management, Users and Groups, Users. Right click the username with the password problem, and select Properties, put a tick in "password never expires ", click OK.
Right click on the user again, select set password. Do what you will in there.
Log off, and then log back on as the user.
    Done.

    Thanks reboot

As soon as I get my XP HD back in I will check into that.

But now that you mention it I may have it set to never expire anyway.

    But will check anyhow.

Can I safetly ASSUME that I am setup OK.

Following the suggestions by reboot I checked both Administator and my User name and they are both set to " Never expire. "

    Thanks again reboot.

Once it's recovered, because everyone forgets what it is a month after installation, set to never expire, and you'll never be prompted.
Of all the possible tweaks/patches/features in XP, this one actually works as advertised ;)
    I'd say you're safe :D

I think it´s strange that some installations have 40 days (a figure I heard) set as expiry date and other installations have no expiry date set by the installer.

Could it be that single user systems have no expiry date but systems set up for multiple users have?

After answering 'Yes' to the question - are you sure you want to leave the password blank - on installation (XP Pro Corp), I've never been bothered again, the screen dosen't even flash by on boot. With only me & the wife and 4 machines, I can't be bothered with passwords anymore....LOL I have a hard enough time remembering which machine does what, let alone a password for it......

    :):) Ain't that the TRUTH :) :)

For me not only three machines ( sometime 4 ) but every one has a different OS on it. 98FE, 98SE and XP Pro.

I had been working on my Wifes' machine ( SE ) then came back to mine ( XP PRO ) and was looking for the " Restart in MS DOS Mode " Never did find it :(

At the time it was not funny. But it is now.
