IEXPLORE caused an invalid page fault in

And it won't let me close the dialog box. This has happened on my parents' computer. I had to reboot yesterday when it happened. I tried the repair thing in the Add/Remove programs dialog.

usually when IE has an error, it has that pop up box with no explanation and a check box for if I want to restart IE. (I have version 6.0)

    Help! :( :(

If you need specifics, I can try to give them to you. I don't want to lose any favorites or my outlook express email, so maybe if there is a new version? Should I upgrade?

    it did help,so far.

I get that dialog box w/ this message: Microsoft Internet Explorer has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience.

I don't have that error reporting tool, otherwise, I would be able to send it to them. How can i get that to work?

This is what I mean by error reporting tool:
The Internet Explorer Error Reporting tool is included with all versions of Internet Explorer 6

Well, I don't think I have that error reporting tool thing. And, I have version 6.0.2600.0000CO of IE.

I could not find that tool to download!

Also, I keep getting the error, even after I delete the password file and recreate it at restart....

I don't think the problem is the password file, because that error still happens.

IEXPLORE Is the file that Start Internet Explorer

KERNEL32.DLL is a MAJOR Windows Operating system file.

The two files named may not be the actuall problem files.

And, this is unrelated to IE, but the start button, when I go to shut down....it used to have a "log off" under the rest of them, but its not there any more....weird

Indicates a Networking Problem. ( not Internet )

All three may well be related. There is corruption somewhere within the OS. ( maybe just files of the wrong version )

I would start by knowing where the WIndows setup files are. If it asks for the Windows files and you can't find them point it to the C:\Windows\inf folder.

Open Network in The control Panel.

Make sure Client for MS Networks is shown as installed.

    Set it for Windows Logon.

    Select OK.

This should replace any files that may be missing.

Restart Windows. This * SHOULD * bring your Log off back.

I don't think it was the password file....because I just closed IE and got that error. I can't close the error box and I don't have that error reporting tool (and I can not find that error reporting tool @ the updates portion of the windows site.)

Is there anything else that this error may be part of?

The Link Brett refered refers to EXPLORER ( windows explorer )not IEXPLORE. ( Internet Explorer )

....because I just closed IE and got that error. I can't close the error box

Indicates corruption within the OS itself. Alias Versionitus.

The Log Off missing also indicates a problem within the OS itself.

Both of which may require a re-install of Windows to fix.

I don't have that error reporting tool (and I can not find that error reporting tool @ the updates portion of the windows site.)

The error reporting tools is not going to do a thing to fix the problem.

Have you tried going through Control Panel/ add/remove and try to uninstall or repair IE6 ?

Have you tried using msconfig and shutting down things that are not really needed that are loading at startup ?

Explorer & Systray are the only two things that are really needed.

Is there anything else that this error may be part of?

Other then System corruption I don't think so.

What version of Windows is involved ?

Did the problem come up as soon as IE6 was installed or was it OK for awhile ?

Last but maybe not least. How was IE6 installed. Was an on-line install done or was it downloaded and then installed ?

BTW. Did you ever get the Defrag problem fixed or is this may be the same hard drive ?

    1. Yes, I have tried the repair IE6

    2. I downloaded and installed IE6 myself

    3. Hang on there - I have a cable modem connection and I *need* my firewall! I also *need* an antivirus program!

-I think I *may* have found the cause...Last Night, after I posted that post here, I decided to do a search for spyware using AdAware...and found that some site had installed gator to my computer. I had removed this awhile back using the add/remove, delete the folder and using Adaware. In fact, I think I remember some site trying to get me to use it when I was surfing in the past week. I searched on the windows site and there was an error related to Gator.....so I removed Gator again..........at least 12 components were related to Gator. I'll be doing another search very soon.

-This error didn't start happening until pretty recently (like the past week or so) And usually, I could close that error box.

-No, I've put the defrag aside for right now because I am probably doing that "$$$maintenence check$$$" in a few weeks. I may try it again, but I'm guessing it will hang again.

    -Windows 98 SE

-A whole reloading of Windows? :sigh: why do you have to go that far? suggesting the reformat of my drive in that other thread was bad enough.

Last year, when I got my cable modem internet connection,my dad was having a problem setting it up. He thought we would have to reload windows, too. But, we eventually got it to work w/o having to reload or reinstall windows.

Ahem ... not quite. Note the final sentence in the following:-

Gator can certainly cause IPF's; so too can Gozilla. If, therefore, you have the latter installed, you may wish to uninstall prior to once again sweeping with AdAware (see this link).

This link should help re: the lost "Log Off" option. If you don't already have TweakUI, download, install and follow the advice in the MSKB article to (hopefully) restore the option.

BTW, it's way too early to even consider a format :)

    That could be.

    Windows 98 SE

That has been known to be a little buggy. I myself had all kinds of problems and errors when I had it.

I said nothing about re-formating. I just said re-install Windows.

A drive does not to be re-formated to re-instlall Windows.

A re-install has been known to correct this type of errors rather quickly.

If done correctly a re-install will look to Windows pretty much the same as a clean install but save most of ( if not all of ) the existing data, settings etc. at the same time.

But it depends on which version of SE you have how it can be re-installed.

The full Version and UPGRADE version should be no problem re-installing from a DOS Floppy boot.

The UPDATE version ( which I have and is useless ) has to be done from within Windows ( which I have tried and will not go into the details of the mix ups caused ).

Or, if the machine in question is an OEM ( Dell, HP, Gateway etc. ) I have no idea how you would go about re-installing Windows as each one more than likely has a different way. And most certainly different then my home built machine.

I don't have anymore spyware and now I'm still getting the error when I close an IE browser window.

The following will be done at a last resort:

    -Reinstalling/Reloading Windows
-Reformatting the hard drive (which is unrelated to this specific problem)

I may try to go back to an *earlier* version of IE. I never had these problems until recently! :(
