I receive 2 copies of all incoming messages since reinstalling windowsxp and oe6. I use msn hotmail but read and send thru oe. When setting up the account again I checked the box that made oe6 the default. Could this be the problem?.
    Appreciate any help.:)

    Some things to check-

Go to Tools\Options and uncheck the box that says "When starting, go directly to my Inbox folder ". In general, you don't want to have any Hotmail account selected whenever you're doing a manual or scheduled download. To poll manually, use the Send and Receive All button from the Local Folders home window.

This occurs when there are 2 OE functions attempting to download at the same time. If there is a scheduled mail check going on and you open a Hotmail folder before that folder is checked, you will see duplicates.

If you have OE configured to check for messages at startup AND to open directly to the Inbox AND your Hotmail account is the default account, then you will see duplicates. In that case, uncheck one of those options (they're both under Tools|Options).

Once you see duplicates, do NOT simply delete the extra copy or you will in fact be deleting both. Simply synchronize that folder or account (or Synch All) and OE will remove the duplicates.

Also check Microsoft Knowledge Base article Q296447
which fixes duplicate messages in OE using Hotmail.

    Hope this helps.

Thank you. Your info was accurate and solved my problem. Also I learned in part what "synchronize" in the tool bar does. I always wondered but was reluctant to press it.:)

You are welcome. I had this same problem when I started using Outlook Express to read my Hotmail. I found the solution in this excellent forum.
