In Win XP, when you type msconfig in the Run box to open the system configuration utility and select the start up group, is there a way to uncheck a start up program and still use the "Normal Start Up" on the General tap?

I tried to stop a Hewlett-Packard printer icon from loading everytime by unchecking it in the start up group. When I rebooted the system, that sign came up telling me about it and when I went back to selecting "Normal Start Up" on the General Tap, that HP item is restarted.

I remember clearly this didn't happen in 98SE.

msconfig is basically for making temporary changes to Startup for trouble shooting purposes.

If you want to control what loads and what does not load at Startup for :

XP Services look at Black Viper's site

For Startup Programs StartUp Control Panel is very handy - you should be able to deal with the HP there.

No. That's the point: you are selecting/deselecting items, so you are doing a Selective Startup. Selecting Normal Startup will cause all items to be checked/loaded again.

You can access the System Config. Utility on XP by:-

    Start
    Help & Support
Use TOOLS (under 'Pick A Task')
On the left you should see a list
    click on 'System Configuration Manager'

    That's It
