I've got 1GB of DDR 2700 on my machine but I would'nt "scrap" the page file. I've set mine to a max and min of 256megs. Haven't heard so much as a whimper from XP about it.

I have 1 GB of PC2100 DDR SDRAM (PC133) on my XP Pro desktop, and don't use a paging file (although, for reasons unknown, the performance section of Task Manager shows a constant Page File Usage History of 270 MB). I do lots of graphics editing, and have had no problems at all.

My XP Pro laptop has 512 MB of PC133 SDR SDRAM and no paging file. Again, no problems.

    Hi Jim,

Ran across this in my XP manual:

    caution

    --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Ifyou have plenty of physical memory installed in your computer, you might be tempted to completely disable your page file. Don’t do it! By design, Windows XP requires a page file for a number of core functions, and several third-party programs will cause out-of-memory errors if you try to get rid of all virtual memory. Remember, Windows doesn’t actually use the page file until it’s needed, so you won’t gain any performance advantage by tweaking your system in this fashion.

    Regards - Charles

    Hi Charles,

Thanks for the heads up! As I said, I haven't experienced any problems because of not using a paging file, but that doesn't mean I might not sometime in the future. Better safe than sorry, I suppose.
