Are you saying you choose a wallpaper, shut down and when you come back the wallpaper isn't there?

Hi Lis, When you choose a new wallpaper, as you describe,
the path to and the name of the file get stored in the registy.
If you re-boot and the wallpaper file is not as you reset it,
then Windows is not loading the same registry as when you
shutdown the PC. If Windows is not loading your last registry,
then it is faulty and Windows is going for a registry copy that is
    not faulty.
Have you tried any registry correction aids ?
eg reboot to DOS and type
    scanreg /fix
    regards

Try opening the image with an image editor (Imaging), and save it as a bitmap file. You should be able to get Windows to run it as wallpaper without having to "view the desktop as a web page ".

    Hi Lis

    Sorry it wasn't clear enough.
Open a an imaging program. The one supplied with Win98 is "Imaging" and is in Accessories if you installed it. You could use Windows "Paint" or other programs that will open a JPEG image. Go to File>Open and find the JPEG file that you want to set as wallpaper. When it is open go to File>Save as. In "Save as" you wil see "Save as type: ". Change this to Bitmap Image [*.bmp].
You should find that there is now another file in the same folder with the same name with the extension .bmp. Set this file as the wallpaper instead of the JPEG.
Make sure "View my Active Desktop as a webpage" in Control Panel>Display>Web is unchecked.

When you set JPEG's as wallpaper, Windows has to use webpage (desktop) view. With my system, the next time I start the machine the webpage view will not work. You can set bitmap (BMP) images as wallpaper without using the webpage view.
Let me know if this still confusing.

Now you need to select a background and insert the image.

In Control Panel>Display>Appearance you can select a background colour in the dropdown list "Item: ">Desktop. Then go to the Background tab...Wallpaper>Select an HTML Document or picture:...click the Browse button and direct it to your .bmp file.
In the "Display" dropdrown is Center/Tile/Stretch, you will see what these do in the preview, you will probably need "Center ". Click apply after making your selections.

    Hope I haven't missed something.

Lis, try some experimenting in "Display (Properties) ". I have spent many hours changing the desktop and setting something I like only to have the kids change it when they see it... "Those colours don't match Dad "...they have much better artistic sense than I do:) .

Let me take a stab at this.

First you need to move the .bmp file you made to the Windows directory.

Next, right click anywhere on the desktop and choose Properties.

Scroll thru the Wallpaper list and select the name of the bmp file you made and click Apply then click OK.

Bmp file would not return to desktop after a shutdown? However, a different jpeg image selected returns every time after a shutdown. Shall we say issue resolved. Case closed. :) :)
