I am dual booting W7Pro and W10. I can play all my videos with W Media Player in W7 but when I boot into W10 and click on my videos I get the MPEG icon with the number below. When I double click these, WMP (12.0.10011.16384) opens and audio plays fine, but the screen only shows the musical note icon, ie audio plays but the video doesn't, for both recent and several years old videos.
Do I need codecs or must I download a new player ? If the latter what is WMP for then !
Thanks in advance, you guys have always helped in the past WMP.PNG ,

You will need the appropriate codecs to play mpeg in Windows Media Player.
In my opinion, use a better media player such as the free, open source player VLC. It plays almost everything including DVDs. If you choose to install VLC, set it to be the default player.

Hi DDow. You can also download and install the K-Lite Codec Pack Standard which will allow Windows Media Player to play all common audio and video files without using a 3rd party media player.

If you choose to download and install the K-lite Codec Pack, make sure to uncheck/decline any optional offers in the installation wizard as they are not needed.

    Thank you Tony and Evan.
As a quick fix I have downloaded the K-Lite Codec Pack Standard and as you say all is now working as I would like. I will now investigate VLC over the next few days to see if that might be a good option as well. At least I know I would not have been sent to a dodgy download site by
As always the guys on this forum have come up trumps (with a small t) for which I thank you.
