    Hi,

Is there any way to make a rule to empty the deleted items folder?

I have Outlook 2003 installed on my work desktop and use it to get my work mail from my works exchange server and my personal mail from my ISPs pop/smtp server.

I am getting a lot of spam sent to my personal account and its being tagged (via spam software) and I have a rule to move it into the delete items folder. I want to add to this rule to empty the deleted items folder at the same time so I never see it.

    Many Thanks

    Extra Background if required.

I use Outlook express at home to read the same personal mail account as at work. My outlook at work is set to 'Leave a copy of messages on the server' and 'Remove from server when deleted from deleted items'.

This means that I can decide to deal with 'personal' email at work and delete so it gets removed. Or allow it to be downloaded at home.

The rule I original set up in Outlook was to permanently delete spam. This worked in Outlook but it was not being removed from the server so I downloaded all the spam again at home in Outlook express!

Manually emptying the deleted items folder (after every time something is put there via the rule) is working for now. But I would like to do this automatically.

I am only aware of Outlook being set to automatically empty the Deleted Items folder when you exit Outlook.

    Cheers.

    Thanks,

I've got that set. However there is something I am not sure about. At what point do the messages actually get removed from the server when you empty deleted items?

Do you have to do another send and receive to remove the items from the server or does it actually happen 'behind the scenes' when you empty the deleted items.

You have to do another send & receive to remove the items from the server.

    Thank You,

I guess I need to extend my request for help then to create a custom rule which will automatically:

    1. Move anything tagged SPAM to the deleted items folder.
    2. Empty the deleted items folder.
    3. Do another send and receive.

It depends on settings on the Server.

There may be settings to Keep deleted items for a number of days, or not to delete items until the store has been backed up.

    Cheers.

Thanks this is the personal mail smtp/pop3 mail provided by my ISP so I don't really know where these settings are.

Outlook is currently set to remove the messages from the POP server when removed from deleted items. That way all my spam can be filtered out at work and good messages left in there to deal with at home. If the rule to deal with spam is set to permenantly delete the messages then they are left on the server (because I guess they have not been removed from deleted items).

I know you can write custom actions in vbscript to add into rule. Has anyone done this?

    Nigel
